at what mileage did you replace your brakes

darren90909, don't mind these a-holes. I'll give you the 411 buddy. The truth is that the Rx-8 needs the brakes changed every 9,000 miles. These forum people don't want to tell you because they were suckered into buying a RX-8. I suggest getting a Corolla instead.

Oh..........that was helpful!
My question still stands..............why does he want to know? Is it because someone is trying to rip him off and says he needs new brakes when he doesn't?
We all know(or we should know) that there are a ton of variables to this equation, but the simple fact of the matter is, that the system(for the most part) will let you know audibly when it's time(for a pad change that is).

well, I have 40,000 miles and as far as my visual inspection it looks like I have 60% brakes left on rear and 50% on front, I was thinking that I should be needing new brakes by now but I wanted to compare with all of you grumps and know-it-alls.

Okay cool............This is my opinion.
At 40k miles I would go ahead and put new pads on, but it's not absolutely needed. Once the pads wear down sufficiently they will squeal as the metal wear indicators will let you know.
That's just me.....it kinda depends on whether or not you are strapped for money, or if money isn't an issue. But...............40k on a set of pads is getting up there pretty high.
Also matters if you drive(brake) hard are tracking the car.............etc.

I can afford new brakes but I guess common sense tells me why when I still have 50% left. I usually waited until 20% left on other cars I have had. retirement is sneaking up on me and I need all the help I can get
so maybe I should start a new post
who has over 50,000 miles and still has the original brakes

im at 32k and replaced the pads on the 3 of my 4 rotors. my friend REALLY overtorqued a nut (probably 175ft/lbs+) on my rear passenger side tire. even a breaker bar and impact socket sledgehammered into place didnt work. the breaker bar was even bending.... after 10 or so minutes of pushing. the lug just gave way. so now i have a round lug...

And to the OP : why in god's name are you asking questions about when to change your brake pads when you have already taken a look at them and decided that they didn't needed to be changed!?!? That totally defeats the purpose of the initial question...does it not? You clearly stated that you have approx 50% on them left and that you don't change them until they are down to 20%. So that should be the answer you are looking for. Or maybe I'm missing something?!?!

I know a coworker (female) who owned a corolla. She never knew she was supposed to change the oil more than once a year. The car ran great. If she owned a RX-8 the engine would have seized up within 2 months.

You completely misread it. The corolla was pointed out as a more "regular" car that might not be as confusing to a regular user.

Oh no, I wasn't commenting on your post mysql, I understood what you were trying to tell the OP. I was responding to the post that I quoted (replace tranny ever 9000 miles remark).

ah.
I have another coworker with a ~2000 model corolla, he's got about 160k miles on it, and it has an oil leak. The engine has literally had no oil reading on the dip stick several times, and made clanking noises before he refilled it with oil. He still travels cross country in it for sales meetings without issue. It's a damn work horse if I ever saw one.

Tell me about it! My father refuses to buy a new car. He got the 1992 corolla used in 1997 and he's been driving the heck out of it for the past 10 years. He keeps saying that if he can get it to 999,999 that he's gonna take it back to toyota so that they can put it in their headquarters on display. He's also hoping that they'll give him a new corolla as a prize!!

Why would you replace your brakes before they were due? The rx8 brakes are more then sufficient for your every day drivers and weekend track warriors. I personally wouldn't let the pad itself get below 1/8 of an inch.
