what is the "real" 0-60 time for AT?

after searching
i've read numerous numbers
ranging from mid 6 (?) all the way to 8.8 (i think i saw this b4)

but what is the real time for it? I'm so confused
w/o brake torque, just plain 0-60..

0-60 in mid 8? Even the auto Mazda 3 has that time...
not trying to bash or start anything
but a mid 8 time just seems unrealistic to me

wait for the '06s, where apparently they are upping the HP closer to the manual trannies.

What your asking for is REAL world numbers and sadly I have not seen any. Personally, I think it's probably in the low 7's.

off the line, they are slower than the manual, when cruising its not too much differnt.

If your getting an auto i would wait for the 06 with the 6speed...also supposed to have a little more power, should drop its 0-60 by about .5 sec

Well, a 'normal start' with an auto-trans is akin to a rolling start in a manual -- so the wide difference you're seeing between quoted 0-60 times for auto versus manual might be about right.
The key to appreciating the AT RX-8's off-the-line performance is past experience. What you need to do is drive nothing but a '94 Toyota Tercel MT and/or '95 Honda Civic LX AT for 5+ years, then trade up to the RX-8. Then the AT RX-8 will feel amazingly powerful.

You obviously didn't search long enough because I have posted numbers before when I had the automatic. It ranges anywhere between 8 - 9 seconds. And getting anything under 8 seconds (like 7.8) is next to impossible/requires neutral slam. That is something you do not want to do to the transmission.

Yeah Jerky--I should have expounded. To get the quickest 0-60 times you need to abuse the tranny by slamming it into drive from neutral--also the quickest way to a new tranny. The new 6speed auto with 212HP should be a mid to low 7 second 0-60 car. It may be more responsive to boosting though.

I had a 2003 Dodge Stratus RT with 200HP (Mitsu Ecplise GT with different body) and I had to drive a AT RX8 while they fixed mine and the AT RX8 felt much quicker. The stated 0-60 for the Stratus is 8.5. My guess would be around 7.9 - 8.0 for the RX8.

I traded the Stratus for the RX8 and had to drive off the Auto RX8 so I had a direct comparison with the two cars. The Stratus was Auto also.

I agree with tlniec above me...I drove a VW Cabrio (2000) from 01 till a week ago, now, the AT RX8 feels like the most powerful thing I've ever driven!

First problem: The RX-8 has crummy low end torque and the only way to make up for this is to rev it high before you launch. Manual RX-8s achieve 0-60 in the 6 second range by being reved up to high RPM (6000 - 8000) and then launching...otherwise their 0-60 is in the 7s. You can't do this too effectively on the automatic...from my experience.

When I had my automatic I tried it putting it into neutral, revving to 5000, then dropping it in drive a couple times but never was too successful. I may have gotten 7.8 seconds once but I can't be certain. You also have to factor in that the speedometer is off by 2mph or so and from what I can remember I was stopping my timer at 60 instead of 62. Is having to go through all that **** just to be slightly under 8 seconds worth damaging your transmission?

Second problem: The 2004 - 2005 Automatics weigh a little more than manual, redline at 7500 RPM instead of 9000 RPM, only have 4 gears (when they really should have had at least 5) and have 197 bhp versus "238" bhp. Thanks to the torque converter, the number you're looking at is more like 140 to the wheels and I'm being generous with that estimate.

That is why the car achieves numbers like Civics. It handles much better though, and is nowhere near as ugly.

If you really care about 0-60 then you're looking at the wrong car. I read another thread and noticed you said you have to share the car with your mother..so that obviously takes stick shift out of the picture. You're better off with: a G35/Coupe, 350z, 2005 Mustang, etc. The automatic versions of those cars have much better numbers than this one.

Also, you can wait for the 2006 automatic RX-8..that will have more horsepower and better gearing (6 gears instead of 4) so I'm guessing it will reach 60 in the 7 second range. I have a feeling that still isn't the figure you're looking for.

thanks for the reply
but serious 0-60 times isn't really a strong factor in my car buying decisions
my point for this thread is that I just want to know the times for the AT car

and yeah.. i can't really decide what car I can buy, I play a small part
I would definite get a stickshift if that is my "own" car

also, price is a factor. I think 05s isn't going that high anymore
It is either the 06 Mazda 3 or this car
but i like the style of this car sooo much!!

and by the reviews i've read and the owner's opinion, this cars seems to be a blast to drive. You can drive fast in any car anyways XD
but the fun factor...not every car can achieve that
i'm pretty sure a civic can't be as near as the RX-8 in terms of everything

G35/Coupe, 350z, 2005 Mustang, they are all great cars
but G35, too expensive for a youngster like me, 350z, two seater i have siblings
and Mustang.. well.. the back seat..you know...can't really function
