I'm in downtown atlanta and in school. No harm to my 8 yet. It depends on which college you are at because some rich kids drive nice M3s and S4s.

I'm glad that I'm getting many different kinds of responses from many differenet types of points of view, this is really helping.

One thing that I guess I should clear up though is that the main reason you guys are saying I shouldn't get it is because of the cost.......well do you guys mean the price of the actual car or the maintenence? You see the deal that I'm getting on the car is basically buying it at cost.......which is less than half the sticker price. So weather I buy the RX8 the 6 or the 3, with the deal that I'm getting I willactually be paying the exact same amount no matter what car I choose.

So as far as the sticker price goes, that makes not difference in my decision, as far as repairs, I'll have the warranty, so the only real expence that would come out of my pocket for any of the cars would be things like, oil, and gas.

Now obviously with the 8 gas will be more, but I looked at the other car which I'm thinking about, the Volvo S40 T5 (what do you guys think if this car?) and it only gets about 3-4 mpg more than the 8. My problem with the 6 is that it's too big a car and I know I won't like it, the 3 is still a little nimble but since the car I currently own handles better than the 8.....driving the pudgy little 3 didn't do much at all for me, it's a nice car and all but too boring for me, I haven't driven the S40 yet but it promises to be a bit more exciting the the 6 or 3.

So that cancels out the worry that the 3 would be a cheaper car than the 8 (as far as sticker price) they'll both be the exact same monthly payment. Only insurance, gas and oil comsumption would be different, and insurace isn't even that much since the 8 is a 4 door (I checked). Also the worry that college guys are dicks and will be jealous.......the school I attend is full of rich kids and the parking lot looks like a damn car show full of Audi A4's TT"s, S2000's, etc....so that's no prob either.

I appreciate all the opinions so far, this is good stuff, but maybe this might change some opinions? Let me know fellas, thanks.

just out of curiosity, what do you drive now?

also factor in your driving style...
if you drive fast, corner hard, and like laying wheels, then factor in money for tires...at an avg of ~$165/tire (range ~$110-$225). Also, the harder you drive, the more oil you use, and obviously the more gas you use.

if you don't drive very hard, then you'll probably be out of college by the time you have to buy tires. I'll probably get close to 30k out of the stock tires.

spark plugs are around $120/set, but you shouldn't have to deal with that until after graduation. if you have the means, then definately get one if you want. just make sure that you can actually afford it.

don't know much about the s40 t5, but i think that is the car that is in the rx8/evo/volvo comparison in windingroad magazine. its a decent read, and its free. Different Strokes for Four Folks

the S40 T5 shares the same chassis as the Mazda3... Ford global C-class platform sharing... basically a upper-scale Mazda3, the S40 is.

looks like cost is not a concern to you, so i will ask you, how diligent will you be in terms of upkeep and maintenance? keeping the oil fresh and topped off is like the #1 maintenance item in keeping a rotary engine running smoothly. will you change the oil religiously at specified intervals, or will all the partying and boozing on campus make you forget about taking care of your car?

also, are you going to be driving in any kind of winter weather (ie ice/snow/slush), if you do, you will need to get winter tires for the 8, as the stock summer tires are useless in those conditions.

I don't drive like a 16yr old boy trying to show off to his buddies, I think I actually drive slow for a car enthusiast, I'm always trying to make sure I don't stress out the engine too much, you know the old saying "Win by driving as slow as possible"? that's what I go by, I speed on open roads and when it's sensible, I don't accelerate from 35 to 75mph while on a steep hill and I don't peel out everytime I leave a gas statiom or grocery store. So replacing shredded tire from driving too hard will never be a prob.

I always keep up on oil changes but in my nissan I never had to add oil in between changes so that might be odd to remember at first.

Gliphon, I currently drive a '95 Nissan 240sx, with non-stock suspension, it handles amazingly, it rattles like crazy, it's low on power, it's dented all over the drivers side......but give me a twisty road and I'm the happiest driver on earth

I probably should've also mentioned that I'm not an 18 yr old college student, I'm 26 and most of the other students at the school I attend are older than 25 also, it's a private school of design so there aren't many fresh-out-of-highschool kids there, there's not Frats or anything like that. So I'd like to think I'm a bit more responsible than I was at 18 as far as not driving like an idiot goes, and will be able to handle the maintenance of the car if required.

Once again any opinions are appreciated.

aaah...i think that if you had thrown your age in at first, you might have gotten different advice. well, maybe

i like that body style of the 240s. for a while, i looked for that body style 240, but everything one i found was asking way too much for the shape that it was in...except for one...and it sold the day before i found it. oh well.

and as for the oil, it shouldn't be much of an issue. mazda rates the oil metering pump at 1 qt / 10,000 miles. although most see a consumption rate higher than that. but if you change the oil every 3000 miles, it should never be an issue...although i still check my oil level at every other fillup.

I know it sounds like I'm really pushing the issue chrism, it's just that I don't want to have regrets about the decision, this all kind of popped out of nowhere, I wasn't planning to get a new car anytime soon then this deal came up but it limits me to Ford family companies.....which I'm not too fond of but decided it's too good to pass up. So I have to decide between a sports car or a entry luxury sedan, pros and cons split them right down the middle so it's a real tough one for me. If I get the S40 it's more in insurance every month but less in gas, the 8 is the exact opposite, if I get the 8 it has minimal room for my big portfolios, the S40 has planty of room, and so on and so forthThat's why I need all the opinions I can get. I wan't to know if it's too difficult to live with the car before I actually experience it, and want to make as much of an informed decision as I can......with that said, any info you guys have on Volvos would be appreciated also haha thanks

Get the 8 if you can afford it. You will not regret it for a second. It strikes a nice balance between luxury (especially if you get Touring or GT) and sports, and the handling is unparalleled. The difference in gas prices and oil will be minute, nothing to worry about. Winter or all-season tires will be needed, but you can offset that cost if you get all-seasons immediately and sell OEMs (you can maybe even make money on that). Sounds like there are no cons to you getting an RX-8, so go for it.

Being a financial advisor, and an RX-8 owner, I would strongly advise against buying this car. Unless, of course, you like being broke and intend to stay that way.

If you were, say, my nephew, I would be more specific: You are out of your mind to buy a new car now, unless you have a huge trust fund that you're not telling us about. You need to stay out of debt if at all possible and start to accumulate both wealth and wisdom. There will be lots of time to have a cool car when you're older.

When I was in college, I had a 98-horsepower Jetta and I got from point A to B just fine. I've never had financial worries and can now buy any kind of car I want (and all I wanted was an RX-8!!)

Good luck, you're smart to ask.
