Welcome back! I enjoyed reading that. Thank you for posting it. It's testimonials like this, that make us realize what an incredible feat of engineering this mazda really is. It just feels so good to be behind its wheel. All the people who think we are crazy (and have never driven an 8) will never understand!

So basically you werent good enough of a driver to get the most out a vette and decided to try to get the most out of something thats far below the performance envelope of a vette.
that is a big FAIL in my eyes. When i worked for infiniti i literally drove G35s and near the end G37s and i got everything out of them and then some. I could make those cars do anything i wanted. But instead of using my money to buy a G35 i bought something a bit harder to master hence my current GTO which i have yet not mastered. I would never consider downgrading because my car scared me, hell thats why i bought it.

Welcome back! I can empathize with your decision, I did something similar. I also had a 2004 which I loved, and sold it both to get something different and to 'move up' to an Infiniti G37. The G37 was a great car, comfortable, fast, solid, beautiful. But, it just somehow seemed souless compared to the RX8. It didn't give me the same feeling of the car being directly hard-wired into my central nervous system. It was fast and capable, but not agile and flingable like the RX8. It just wasn't as much fun.
So, earlier this year the G37 went and I picked up another RX8. It's felt good to be back. It is addictive, and either people get this car (and then can't get enough of it), or they don't.

The Michigan "WANKEL"
I could have had much faster cars than my new 2009 RX-8. I chose the RX-8 because of the way it steers and handles (and looks). I would rather have a slower car with much better handling and steering than a much faster car with inferior handling and steering (e.g., GTO). I can always work to make my RX-8 faster (yes, it will be expensive to make real gains), and that's half the fun, and reason, I bought the car. I'm starting with a car that has a world-class chassis, and I can have some fun making it a bit quicker. Buy a car with a run-of-the-mill chassis, and you're stuck with it. I think the only other car (within reasonable price limits) that I would perhaps rather have than my RX-8 is a Porsche Cayman, but even the non-S version would have been considerably more expensive, and I see more Caymans on the road than I do RX-8s, which I also like.

+1 on Welcome Back!
I test drove a bunch of cars before getting the 8. It wasn't the fastest, but it was the most connected and did exactly what I wanted. Didn't hurt that it was the one of fastest stopping car on the R&T test panel then.
Car and Driver still sneaks the 8 in as a best driver now and then.

Thanks again everyone for all the welcoming remarks. Interesting occurrence happened last night but first a bit of background: So, I'm still going to get the RX-8 but I've come to the final conclusion that financially I will have to sell my 2007 STi, that, despite a few things, I still love very much. It's a hard fact to accept, and as stupid as this sounds, I feel like I'm selling a child. Yes, much like the day I sold my 04 RX-8, parting with the STi is something that will be quite painful. All the painstaking care I've given it, all the modifications I've done, only to be given (most likely) to some kid who will do who knows what with it.
Anyway, I was getting really sad, and, truth be told was considering just keeping the Sti. So now for the funny occurrence:
I'm in Manhattan last night till 2AM (reconnecting with some old friends), and as I get back to my STi the thought dawns on me that it's going to be dam near impossible to find a spot back by my apartment in Brooklyn. I Hop in the car, dreading the upcoming search for parking (I am exaggerating a bit because the area of Brooklyn I live in in usually not that bad parking wise, but since it was so late I thought I'd have a problem). Anyway, I get back to my street, and there is only one spot left, right in front of my apartment incredibly. It's quite dark, so I didn't initially realize, but none other than a brand new 2009 Manual RX-8 grand touring is parked in front of that empty spot. Now, let me just say that I live on a very local street, so generally I see the same cars there all the time. Considering that Mazda is only moving ~150 RX-8's a month, what are the chances, especially on my street, that the car parked in front of mine would be a brand new RX-8.
Anyway, probably a dumb story, but I took this as some kind of a sign. I was thinking about the RX-8 all night, and what I should do about the STi and everything else. When I left, there was a shitty Nissan Altima in the spot that the RX-8 was now in, so it had shown up rather recently. The chances were just so slim that I took this as a sign from above that I was meant to be in an RX-8
.
Anyway, hope that wasn't too stupid, just thought I'd share that.

I had a 2001 vette for about a year. I topped it out once on a nice empty stretch of interstate with a few of my fellow police ahead making sure the road was clear. Speed was awsome but that was the only time I tapped the potintial of the car. I enjoyed driving my modded '91 awd talon more because you could tap it's capabilities more often in the day to day drive. That was then and this is now and the only thing that I would trade my 8 for is a newer one that still has warranty. I've raced dirt track, drag, and SCCA World Challenge and the only vette that I had more fun in than my 8 was the one I drove in Trans-Am for half a season. The only thing vette on it was the body style. So DRFTGTO you a TOOL. You'll wrap that GTO around a pole before you ever get close to mastering it. This gentleman gave a heartfelt write-up and you try to flame him here of all places. You don't have the inteligence to master a Ford Pinto much less a sports car. And by the way, I've had my 8 for about 2 months so I'm not defending a long time friend but new aquaintance. F*%}ing TOOL!

There is a difference between a muscle car and a pleasure car - muscle cars have power and give you a good workout - but its like eating brussalsprouts and liver...it feels good when you stop!
A pleasure car is a work of art! It does not cause pain! You are not tired and deaf when you stop - It feels good to drive it - and it feels even better when you lose that obnoxious red vette on the twists...
Yessss...... Welcome back to something really classic!

welcom back on board Rot8te! I absolutely love the car I have now, but at some point will likely get another 8 myself...they are so much fun to drive and would like to take it out on the track.
