Whats the deal with the 6spd transmission?

I have already searched but was unable to find what I needed so please don't flame me.

What's the deal with the 6spd transmission? I have heard rumors over in the seven forum that Mazda took a Miata 6spd transmition and used it in the 8. If this is true what year and gen Miata is this transmission from? How much did Mazda have to change to get it to fit up to the Renesis engine?

I am posting here becasue who else would know other then the good people of the RX-8 forum. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Sincerely,
Jason C. Williams

The Miata 6 speed and the RX-8 6 speed are both manufactured by Aisin in Japan. While they're related, they are not identical - the ratios are different, the materials are different, synchronizers are different, etc.

Thanks Gordon,

I am not as consurned about the ratios as I am about the casings and the housings. Are these the same size? Do they have the same parts numbers? Do they connect to the drive shaft in a similar way? How about the bolt pattern? Does anyone know any technical details to compair the two? Thanks.

The Miata and RX-8 transmissions are made by the same manufacturer AISIN.

End of similarities...

Gentalmen, thought you might find this interesting as well. I found what I was looking for from the Rotary Gods on the seven forum.

Sure the Rx-8's tranny is modern, smoother, precise and feels 150 times better <then the FD's> ...but...

Its a miata tranny and the same tranny as in the Japanese Is300. These tranny's start to break after about 250 RWHP.
Interesting don't you think. Apparently several FD owners who also have 8's have already broken there gear boxes at the track.

Now I wonder if the T2 transmission that Miata guys use to beef up there drivetrains will work with a Renesis, hmmmm.
