whats RX8 top speed in 6th gear?

Wow... this has been revived quite a few times. Might as well chime in. To those of you who have attained those speeds and still lived to tell the tale, as well as kept possession of your car, congratulations. Your ***** must be the size of oranges. I just went to traffic school for doing 80 in a 65 (a redline a day keeps the carbon away) and after 6 hours of that, plus a fat fine, I would hate to think of what topping out the 8 would get you. Even in Arizona, where you'll see 70 or 75 speed limit highways, you'll still be doing double the limit. Has anyone seen the video of Top Gear where they received a ticket from the California Highway Patrol for going 210 mph or something ludicrous like that in a Bugatti?

I'll add my two pennies to this zombie thread.
I understand why some people do it.
I think however once you get it out of your system, risking life and limb fads away.
I have yet to break 100 mph in my 8 and I have no plans on doing so but back in my Supra dayz I ran well into the triples twice.
I got it out of my system.
Just knowing that my 8 can run 145 to 155 is enough for me as the real fun is in the drive and not the top end.

i've gotten mine to 153 in 6th gear...140ish in 5th...but I wasn't trying to push the accelaration, I was just curious to see the top speed on a small by-pass (highway) streach.
all I have is racing beat wires.
ran out of room. tires need balanced...car got alittle rough at 140+

lets' say this... back in my sales days we blew by a trooper going 127 ( in a 55... ) in a expedition that was tricked out.. by the time he even turned on the lights we were a good mile up the road.. by the time he pulled out we couldn't see him anymore.. We talked the driver into just pulling over, since we knew he was going to either eventually catch us or radio up ahead. it took a good 3 minutes for him to come blowing right past us and he almost went out of sight before he realized he had past us. He would never have caught us if we had kept speed. He had to go well over 130 mph just to catch up... ( if he went 130 he'd be miles behind us forever ). The diffrence is there's always a road block for you, they have lights and sirens and people usually tend to get out of the way.. although here that's not always the case.
On a good side the cop walked up to the window, said "slow down andretti" and walked back to his car and left.. best traffic stop i've ever experienced....

I foolishly was going to fast one day on an access road and happened to pass a cop driving on the highway....I was over doubling the speed limit.
He exited the highway lights on right on my rear. I pulled over into a parking lot sick to stomach because I didn't know what was going to happen. Jail?
Anyway, he walked up and the first thing he said was, "I didn't know a Wankel could wind up that fast..."
In the end, we had some car talk (brief car talk) he used to own a first gen Rx-7 and owns a Vette now. He told me to slow down a little and wrote me a ticket for 75 in a 45. Whewww! Lesson learned.
I know that is completely off topic.

I'll chime in and say I hit, and GPS confirmed it, 155mph in 6th (showed 156 on tach).
Never doing it again. Not ever. It wasn't wobbly or anything but the sheer speed is daunting.
I'll have to say, the vision blur bullshit that games/movies put when you get to "high speeds" is complete crap. There was no vision blurring what-so-ever, just a very scary awareness creeping in that crashing at 155mph would mean certain death.. which immediately prompted letting go of the gas and hitting the brakes. >.>

What the hell? where do you guys find room to go this fast in RX-8s? when a bunch of us went to the track a few months ago there was a beautiful 2 or 3 mile 4 lane recently paved stretch of hgihway and i managed 165 before shuting down (did not fel like i was going fast)
and the RX-8 which started to pull before me hit about 138mph GPS confirmed, how long of a stretch do you need to go 150 ish?
But i do agree about it feeling much faster in the 8. For some reason i felt safer blasting thru some beautiful curvy Roads at 90 plus, but 130 on the highway felt much less confidence inspiring. But i have to giver it to you guys, your cars handle amazingly, i was shocked especially since the 8 i drove had the stock all seasons on and yet still handled like a dream, my car will never have the same handling abilities :/

i'll say that i dont know what people are saying about the rx8 feeling planted above 135.
the whole car starts to lift up into the air. you can feel it. it feels lighter. to go those speeds safely (and why i've only gone above 135 once) you need some sort of front splitter and a huge gt wing on the rear. the car was still accelerating at 149 (5th gear) though.
interesting thing about 6th gear is that every 1krpm is 20mph. 60mph, we all know is 3k rpm. so, 80 is 4k. 100 is 5k. 120 is 6k. 140 is 7k. 160 is 8k. 180 is 9k.

Fuel cut-off in 6th is 184 (or 186). There is a video somewhere of someone bouncing the rev limiter in 6th...on jack stands.
That being said, without any other factors, aerodynamics limits the 8 before that mechanical limit. One thing alot of the people in this thread haven't mentioned is if they have the factor appearance package or not, spoiler or not, and moonroof deflector or not. Those would all make a difference in the top speed of "totally stock" 8s. I would guess that the 8s with the appearance package and spoiler have a somewhat lower top speed (more drag), but feel more stable up there. Anyone with the moonroof deflector will be somewhat slower, without any benefit.
With appearance package, stock spoiler, no deflector, I have been to 140 in 5th and from 60mph, it only took me about 1.5 miles to hit. I felt VERY planted and stable at that speed. No shaking, vibration, no 'light' feeling. On the other hand, a friend of mine on here was around that speed with no spoiler and then with a spoiler (not factory), and said he noticed a drastic improvement in the feeling of how well planted it was.
I did it once, and it wasn't -fun-. Exhilarating? Yes. Financially Terrified? Yes. Fun? No. I'd much prefer 60s and 70s on curvy backroads to 140 on a straight.

But dont get me wrong nothing puts a smile on my face like blasting down some curvy roads at the limit(sometimes past) of traction, in fact i owe the pleasure of finding that out to RX-8s, before i took one down some curves i made fun of them relentlessly but after that experiance...i understand haha

I don't think you're alone but for me running 135 to 140 was a rush but not in a good way.
It was like I was close to death.
I really felt that way.
Kinda like what DarkLord7854 said.
One wrong move or one pothole or oil slick or car moving over into your lane.....Anything and you have no real control at that speed no matter how the car feels.
Productions cars on street tires on public roads were never meant to be at those speeds.
Not being a Mom or telling people what to do but to me,I can't see it in a good way.

Ive noticed i that the closer i am to death the more alive i feel
I dont think i stand alone in that respect either

yeah, at exacally 160mph, things start to seem alot faster lol. Thats when everything goes alittle blury and time slows down haha

Personally, I've always had a rule about not going over 120 MPH on the street, I'm old enough to know my limits and wise enough to stay within them. I live in Arkansas though, and it takes some *****/stupidity to go that fast on the highways here, they aren't straight and they're filled with tractor-trailers.
If traffic is clear and the road is straight and conditions are good and the car is stable at high speed etc., then most reasonably good drivers can handle 120 without much of a problem, though it involves hyper-awareness and ***-clinching terror. But things happen pretty damn fast at that speed, that's pretty much the limit for most people for any sort of attempt at reaction to the unexpected.
At 140+ MPH on the street, you'd better hope that God is your copilot. If you're driving across Oklahoma and the highway is clear to the horizon and you have no passengers and you want to go for it, go ahead, it's your car and your life. But keep in mind that you have almost ZERO time to react to anything in the road before you are on top of it.
Think about what might happen if you hit a retread at 140+. Then ask yourself if you think you can AVOID hitting a retread at 140+, assuming that you actually see it first.

yes I hit 181 mph in my rx8. if tou read it was going down a mountain on the interstate at that. the rush is a deathdafieing feeling but fun still.
yes the car had way too much lift at that speed. the aerodynamics of the car def hinder it the faster you go. but there is that sweet spot in the 150-160 area that it feels a lot more stable than it really is.
as for us guys having the room for these speeds. have you ever been on the highways and freeways in montana idaho north dakota south dakota utah new mexico? theres areas where the road is straight for miles apone miles. the areas with the slightest decline make for the funnest.
I still prefer the mountainous curvy roads any day. but when out on the straights you have to find something to get a thrill and scare the crap out of yourself.

but 155 gps vs 156 on the tach, Or speedo? but you should have had better luck in 5th.
and if this happened you must have had lot of room..

Ok well here's what I have done. on a flat surface I hit 160 on a slight decline I hit 167 both of those I ran out of driving room. coming off a muntain with a steep decline I hit 181 with lots of running room before the car became so unstable I had no control. I have a severe lead foot and often travel everywhere in the 120 to 130 range. and have broke the 140's at least 3 dozen times. the car does get unstable above 140 but a lil over 150 it really hunkers down and feels much more solid again.
I love montana. now if they would only go back to the no speed limit.
ironically when I hit a deer I was going under the speed limit.
