When warmed up and driving normally, mine sits between about 85C and 90C, but I have an aftermarket mod that turns the fans on early.
I very rarely see water temps much over 95C even when pushing it hard.

I recently ordered a ScanGauge. What's the highest water temperature still considered safe for rotaries? (This is more of a concern for me at track days)

Recommend doing a search, I don't know really what the highest is.
I'd get real nervous around 107/110C and I know people have reached that and over in some cases.

Typical 85C with low ambient
Highest 100C after some hard charging on a hot day before MM tune

never above 85° when cruising, never above 100° at the track. There are exceptions of course

It's because we're stupid. Working in base ten makes everything easier

I will never understand why Mazda did not put an actual water or oil temp gauge in the 8.

same reason we don't have a working fuel pressure gauge or a mpg gauge.
we're too stupid to read it, they were too cheap to give us one, or we wouldn't know what to do with it even if we had it.

pick one.

different sides of the same coin.. oil and water temp will destroy a stock engine in no time.

Failing FP will lead to other issues that will by their nature require investigation.

A MPG gauge on a sports car is about the dumbest thing ever

the average owner does not care what the water temp, oil temp or fuel pressure is.

and mazda didn't want to actually show us how bad our mileage is.

per dashhawk, my 'normal' temp pretty much stuck at 180 degrees. At idle for a bit, Ive seen as high as 208. Over 230 is problem zone.

The OEM temp gauge actually moves to the 1/3 mark at roughly 150 degrees for reference.

Yepper... the gage moves a little and stays there.

If it EVER moves higher your over heating.

Just for ***** and giggles, I've raised my "call it quits" temp at the track to 245°F.

So far, so good.

Driving around, 185° - 195°.

There's people on this board who don't change their socks as often, or as quickly, as you change your engine.

Yeah, I don't want to change my motor, but it seems to not particularly care about running hot, so YMMV.

it will not blow at that temp--but do it repeativily and it will not be a 50K engine.

Why would I care about that? Too many things get experimented with to leave the motor in that long.
