I found one with 5 open complaints to Mazda..It was an early build and it appears it was in for service @ 18k..The rear tires where bald and the customer stated he/she didn't have the funds to replace them..
"Cust sts rear tires bald. Cust sts does not funds to purchase new tires and sts dlr should replace"
humm..

I can personally state that I am selling my car because of financial reasons. When I purchased the car it was well within my budget.. But my wife and I had a string of bad luck, combined with some good luck, which total in a 40%+ income drop. So I had to decide between my bike and the car. The bike payment is $200 the car is $600. I chose the bike hands down because I love bikes over any car. And the $600 extra a month in my pocket didn't hurt either.
BTW, incidents I spoke of...
Bad news: 20% salary drop due to moving to an area where we had more friends. (Still able to afford the car)
Good news: Wife became pregnant with our soon to be first born. :-) Therefore she hasn't been able to work for a while as she is a teacher and most places don't want to hire someone about to go on maternity leave. (So add'l baby cost + her loss of a job = a lot more then we expected.)
I am simply selling the car now before we come across another life changing event that could make us start to lose money. Right now we are breaking even every month. :-)

Possible reason
This is only a guess, but it might be because unlike the 7's the 8's are quite a bit more of a hit in the pocket book.
After revewing several of the negative comments, it seems that many who buy the 8's don't have a clue what a rotory engin is or how to operate it and care for it. So, for the ignorante. When in dought don't learn simply get rid of the 8 and get their money back.

Most Problems Fixed
I agree that early adopters (of the '03 and early '04-manufactured 8s) had some serious (hard starting) and annoying problems. I would expect this with any brand new vehicle (first model year), esecially with one as complex as the RX8. On the up side, it sounds as if most of the problems (with the exception of mileage) have been fixed in the more recent cars.
That said, if you're having problems, enjoy the high resale value and trade up to an '05 in a month or two, or buy a lower maintenance and higher reliability vehichle! IMO. (Or buy a Honda Insight and get 60-66 MPG!)

I had an 8 for six months and traded it. For what I paid for the vehicle, regardless of whether or not it was a new model, I expected a higher level of quality that what I got. As I have stated in other posts, I purchased a RSX about a month after they were released and it had been in the shop once during two years of ownership. (Now here is where some have said that my expectations are too high after owning an Acura...uh okay so Acura makes better cars?)
So here goes my partial list:
- Poor gas mileage (13/19 average on A/T) regardless of how driven…under 3,500RPM shifts, winding it out, with DSC, without DSC it did not matter). Mazda and Dealership states it must be the way I drive.
- Flooded (once before the L flash, once after although the second time recovered better)
- Hotter plugs installed to help with the flooding
- Rattle in driver’s side door (not fixed after two attempts)
- Interior parts that scratch very easily or break – center arm rest cover broke off.
- A/C did not cool and it sounds like a 747 taking off when on high.
- The heated (barbeque) cup holders.
- Parking break will not stay down when cold during the winter months.
- Dealership issues: knowing more about TSBs and flash updates than they do. Having to argue to get items addressed
Now many will try to discount all of the above issues as either I don’t know how to drive the car, sorry dealership, EPA’s fault, (insert other excuse here).. Sorry that does not cut it and only shows that you are completely closed minded and only see the 8 as a perfect car. I can understand someone being passionate about it but in some cases it goes too far.
I’m sorry but there are those that have legitimate complaints about many of the above issues or others. Say you are not experiencing any issues…great consider yourself lucky but don’t chastise others that are. Some of these cars have issues, many do not. If you are looking, roll the dice. I lost and got out. It is truly a love/hate relationship. The 8 is a beautiful vehicle that handles extremely well. I just wish it lived up to what it was expected and marketed to be.
Sorry for the lengthy post…

Well here in vegas there aren't that many rx8's for sale. The a/c has never been an issue for me and it gets in the 110's sometimes. I bought it end of Oct. '03 and have had to take it in for reflashes, a recall (passenger airbag). Bought it right before my 25th bday and am fortunate enough to be able to afford the rising gas prices and upkeep of car. My mpg is around 18-20 city and 22-25 highway. I lean more toward the 1st year bugs of new models and are still crazy over my 8, although I do understand how some people might expect more for the $$ they paid. If I wasn't happy w/ it I would sell it too.....I wish that would apply to the ball and chain!! :-) I'm joking!!

Sorry to hear you had to get rid of your car but this forum continues to be an excellent source of information on RX-8's as plenty of those issues have been thoroughly discussed.
