Why don't you guys just be honest and tell him how to really do it? Everybody knows that you got to dump it at 9K and do a quick double jack to clutch to overcome the wheel hop. You will be amazed at what happens. If you don't know how to double jack the clutch, borrow a friends car and just keep practicing. You will be a pro in no time.

Hope you don't value your legs, I wouldn't be surprised after too many of those high rpm dumps if parts of the clutch, pressure plate, and/or flywheel come flying up through the underbody of the car.

ok....maybe your problem is that 8k isn't enough rpm's to produce the necessary torque needed to spin the wheels freely.....maybe your should try your next clutch drop when you hear the bbbeeeeeeepppppp.

Jeez, you guys are a bit harsh on this guy don't ya think? God forbid we actually abuse the clutch on a sportscar….it sounds like you guys are paying his maintenance bills! “Flywheels will come though the floorboards”…c’mon, give me a break!

The answer to his original question? He has to simply find the sweet spot on a high RPM launch, learn to feather his clutch to avoid axle hop. All cars can do it, Porsche’s are notorious for it. Oh, and no need for a 8000rpm launch, my best launches are at 6500 (the meat of the power curve) - no hop and perfectly straight wheel spin.
Oh, and no flywheels through the floorboard yet.

They arent ripping on him so much for the fact that hes dropping his clutch, im sure plenty rx8 owners have. Problem is he has no clue about wtf that does to his transmission thats the pathetic part. Who in their right mind with a tad bit of common sense would be so gullible as to believe that dropping ur clutch at 8k wouldnt do anything to the clutch/transmission. Ridiculous....

Before doing this you need to tow a 15,000 pound boat for around 1000 miles. After that the dump will be very smooth because the clutch will be totally worn out. You can also use the clutch springs as decorative items around the house and the transmission case can be a planter.

you cannot compare a bike "wheelie" to dropping the clutch at 8000rpm(not feathering it, just straight dropping it.) the bike counters the hp by "poppin a wheelie", but the rx8 can't thus aaalllllll that stress is helded with the drivetrain.

my friend has done this a few times with me in his car (WRX). By "this" i mean dropping the clutch and causing shaking, clunking etc. now he has some major problems with his clutch. i'm sure it could be done with less problems by an expert...but either way, i guess i dont have enough money to waste when i ruin expensive parts in my car.

I have seen it happen on other cars, though they had dual-mass flywheels, but still there is enough stress there when dropping the clutch at those high of rpm's where those parts can break apart.

Aftermarket swaybars should help with the wheel hop. However, the suspension on the 8 is not tuned for drag racing, it's tuned for cornering. So if you want to put all the power down smoothly you will probably want to do suspension modifications.

I think the consensus is, if you want to do clutch drops and straight runs, you bought the wrong car. The 8 is best appreciated by you, the passenger and the car in your rearview as you lose them in the TWISTIES!

yup. When my Dad was a kid and modding old Mercs, they used to put big Caddy engines in em and use the stock FW & tranny. And this was a definite problem if not aligned properly.

Sounds like this kid...did not pay for the vehicle himself. I just can not see someone that bought their own 8 abusing it like that. Optimal RPMS for a launch is ~5-6000RPMs and ease the clutch out.

Actually not the floor board but the side fender. In a video on Streetfire I think.....an RX-7 (FD) was moified and racing at a drag strip. The engine rev limiter had been removed and they flywheel exploded out the right side of the fender of the vehicle....while he was revving the engine up before his launch.
This is why Racing Beat will claim that their Aluminum flywheel is less then safe over 10,500 RPMS.
From Racing Beat:
"WARNING: None of the Flywheel or Clutch components shown in this site should ever be allowed to exceed 10,500 RPM under any condition. This same RPM limit applies to stock components. You must use an engine RPM-limiter to prevent excessive RPM. Failure to implement the above may result in serious injury or even death."

Odds are, if they were "tire smoking" launches, they weren't trying to do it with the traction control on. Once the tires start spinning, and the clutch is fully engaged to the flywheel, then you aren't roasting the clutch anymore. If you dump the clutch with the traction control on and it starts firing the brakes and cutting ignition, you could probably save time and just take a screwdriver to the disk and put sand in the tranny case.
