Wheel Locks

I got my vehicle used, from an Audi dealership, about 2 months ago, and I got a flat. No big deal, it's a flat, except I didn't get wheel lock keys, and the dealership won't help. I have the certificate from the owner's manual for the wheel locks, but how do I get a key?

you would probably have to go to mazda ... or you can have em break the lock and then just buy new ones

If I had to buy a wheel lock key, I'd just buy four new regular lugnuts from Mazda instead. I'm not a fan of the locks unless you live in an area with high wheel theft.

I don't feel the need for wheel locks around here. So I may just have shop replace em then.

Also, the dealer's only response was they don't have them, and they should be in the vehicle. What do they even look like? And where might they be? I assume they're not there, but I'll check anyway.

I thought good tire shops can get them off. I'm sure you are not the first.

if you dont want them just buy 4 new regular ones...... as for getting them off take a 12 point socket that is just slightly smaller than the keyed nut pound it on with a hammer and just take them off... be carefull if you have cheap sockets will probably damage them a good quality one should be tough enough.

the keyed nuts are round.

anyway, i changed my wheels around a long time ago and left the key socket on there. i took it for a short drive so i could retighten the bolts afterward. the key socket was not there afterwards. -_-

mazda wont sell you just 4 key sockets iirc. so i just had them put 4 new regular lugs on there. i drove around with no locks for at least a good year. i figured if i get my rims stolen, geico will just be buying me new enkei rpf1s.

You can buy replacement keys here...

They will need a clear picture of the locks. I was in a similar situation several months ago when I had new tires put on my 8. It was like $15 plus shipping.

Hope this helps

Didn't McGard want some kind of proof that you were the rightful owner?

Anyway, there are a number of threads on this topic. Tire shops have wheel lock removers that look like sockets but have easy-out-like blades on the inside. You can buy a set of those yourself if you're so inclined. A new set of wheel locks (if the old ones are destroyed) costs somewhere between $25 and $50.

Tire shops can get them off, then go with McGard Spline drive nuts.

i have autozone knockoffs for the winter since mcgard spline style lugs use the low profile "tuner lug" size. i hate the open ended tuner lugs since they rust.

they cost me $30. real mcgard spline lugs are $150.

the problem is that the keys are the same.

I used my buddy's key from his rx-7 on my speed6, then when I got my rx8, they didn't give me a key and therefore sent me a new set - which worked on the set that was on my car. I then used the same key on my mom's lexus. They are halfway useless. It's a deterrent, but if someone wants your wheels, that factory key is not going to do sh*t.

I've got the McGard spline drive lug nuts w/ their locking key - it's a little different, but I still realize that if someone REALLY wants my wheels... well... they're probably going to end up with them... sucks, but that's reality in our society.
