When passing another 8 owner...
#76
Funny this topic is here.
Just today a fellow RX-8 owner flashed there lights at me when we passed (I have owned my RX-8 about 3 weeks now). I almost did not know what to do. I just kind of waved. (So if you are reading this and I passed you on Penn and did not flash, I am sorry... :o) I have had this happen with no other car I have ever driven and it makes me proud.
Since then I have passed another RX-8 and we exchanged headlight flashes...
Man I love this car.

Came up behind another 8 on the highway: he probably saw my big grin in his rearview and exchanged a wave before taking his exit. :D
Passed, very slowly, on a city street by a red 1st gen RX-7: gave me a big thumbs up! I waved back.
Waved at a Miata driver: I think I scared her.
The best one, though: I was pulling into a crowded restaurant parking lot, and the attendant said, "I have a space in that back corner, but you probably don't want to squeeze the Mazda in there..." I must have looked a little puzzled, so he added, "I had an '80 RX-7." I gave him a thumbs up, despite his not actually being in a car.
I figure it's like a Jeeper once explained to me: "CJ drivers always wave. CJ drivers always wave back. Cherokee drivers sometimes wave back. Grand Cherokee drivers are on the phone." I think we have all kinds driving the 8, but there are a decent number of enthusiasts among us who are happy to recognize each other.

Thoumbs Up for the Most Part
When I see another 8 with the exception of one driver in the area, it's a nod, thumbs up, or a wave.
When the 8 first came out in 2003, I got one of the first brilliant black RX8's in the area. Apparently in black the * looks so different in the beginning many did not know at first it was an RX8.
Now that I have change the appearance I get the same "What the Hell is That" look, like I did when I first got it. Even from other 8 drivers.
I really get the high sign from 7 drivers though.
With the blue mint aero parts on the car, the girl at the paint shop said the car now looks a bit like the “Batmobile.”
Well 8’s should stand out right?

I generally flash my lights but rarely get a response in Atlanta. There are a lot of enthusiats in Atlanta but we're still in the minority. BTW...the one time I did get a response it was from a middle aged person (like myself).
Also, I found that when I bought my Miata 10 years ago in S. Florida I got many responses.

Not many RX-8s in my particular corner of WA state, so it's always a shock to see other one. The first one I ever saw here was silver and we were approaching slowly in a 25 limit, so I thought "I'm definitely gonna get an acknowledgement". I wave. Nothing. I wave harder. Nothing. I stick my whole freeking arm out the window and wave like a lunatic. Nothing. Hmmm...probably thought I *was* a lunatic
I almost always get a wave, a Miata salute (arm raised into sky pointing out top down status) or a big smile from other Miata drivers when I'm driving my Miata. I remember the first sunny day this year and I met a red Miata, top down coming round the corner and we both grinned the widest grins at each other. It was a great moment. I really hope those other RX-8 owners start to get some sense of belonging to a special community.

rex - there's definitely a decent number of RX-8's out here. In fact, I went out this evening to Capitol Hill and saw a Ti Gray parked on Broadway.
Anyway, there's probably more on the (L)eastside tho, but they never wave back. I saw an old guy in a VR the other day at an intersection and waved, but he just stared at me and drove off.

The other day I came off the highway and found another 8 on my back bumper. I guess the guy was trying to say hi and soon backed off. He then came around the side and I gave him a honk and thumbs and his passenger smiled and waved.
The 7 owners continue to hate...lol, it's sad when there are problems in the family. LOL
