When the RX8 Automatic beats the RX8 Manual ...
Ok. so the RX8 does 6.5 sec 0-60 with one adult (driver). But if you add 50 lbs. of appearance package & spoiler plus two adults and one fat 100 lb. kid in the car's backseat --- my guess is that the 0-60 goes down to about 7.8 - 8.0.
Based on the cartest simulation, the Auto can do 7.3 seconds with one adult, but loaded -- it will do about 8.2. So an RX Auto without any appearance package (50 lbs. off) with one passenger can beat the RX8 manual (loaded).
:D :p :D

ok.. so maybe it will do 7.6 sec ... but the auto can still do 7.3 ... hehe
BTW several of the car test I've seen only rates the manual between 6.4 - 6.7.
The 5.9 sec --- was not that the 0-60 speed when Mazda claimed the RX manual as having 247 hp instead of 238 hp??? Then the HP changed due to meeting environment standards in the US.

Why are the manual owners always bashing the auto? Did you see the consumer feedback at Edmunds. It seems the tranny has a lot of problems. The manual tranny gets damaged quickly and the clutch gets stuck and burned out as a couple of reviews said. So many reports of RX8 manual owners who probably don't hang around this forum. Here one complaint about manual. (I'm not bashing manuals, I'm just relaying the feedback from Edmunds.com about manual trannies)

Style: 4dr Coupe (1.3L 2rtr 6M) Rating 7.0
Review: i bought my rx-8 about five months ago, its been through 2 transmissions, and continual factory problems, with no good manufacturer customer service. fun to drive, handles great!! too many minor problems.
Favorite Features: styling, body lines. rotary accents all over
Suggested Improvements: fatory cusotmer service
It seems like manual trannies are falling apart much much faster than auto trannies. And don't forget guys that manuals have slooowww and weak torque. It won't beat an automatic in twisty roads with a lot of low gearing.

Lay off the crack and get a clue. MT has a nice advantage in the twisties, the little bit of extra torque the AT has will not even come close to making up for the lower HP, extra drivetrain lose, and lack of driver interaction. The AT is slow, deal with it.

Sorry, we manual owners aren't always ragging on the auto owners - YOU started this thread! PS - that Edmunds review you posted was written by a moron who doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. I'd bet he's the reason his car is blowing transmissions, not any inherent fault - he doesn't know how to drive it properly! That's abuse, not a defective transmission design.

Gordon

I'm just stating the facts I've read. No hard feelings. I started this thread for fun, not for bashing. It was meant to be a light joke. I know the manual has more HP, but it's a fact that autos have more torque.
I've done a search on this forum and I was surprised to see a lot of bashing on the autos. Oh well ... this is a discussion that never ends.
Regards and Peace. to the manuals ... keep on driving

"Why are the manual owners always bashing the auto?" WTF? I think the name of this thread was "When the RX8 beats the RX8 Manual". Now then, who is bashing whom?
BTW, the auto does beat the manual in one category: The auto ends up at the used car lot alot sooner than the manual, as those who made the initial mistake try to acquire a manual.

No prob ... I hope you enjoy what you drive, as I enjoy mine. After all, they are all still 8's. I know several guys who drive, and like their auto 8's.
To each his (or her) own.

Yeah because we all know the best drag cars are MTs and the best track cars are ATs

Stuck in a love triangle
The only wayan automatic can beat a manual is if the driver in the 6spd drops the clutch below 2000 RPM and keeps shifts under 7500 RPM. And anyone who has driven an Rx8 for more than one day will know never to do something that stupid.
But as great as all the manual Rx8 owners make theircar sound -- it seriously is not worth trading in or selling an automatic Rx8 for (at least not in my opinion). In retrospect I wish I had a manual Rx8 today sincetheres more fun that can be had w/one and more freedom but I certainly wouldnot sell my auto for one -- and especially not for performance reasons. If Iwere going to sell my Rx8 todayin order to buy a faster car -- then a stick Rx8 definitely would not be its replacement.
I test drove amanual once again a few weeksago while my automatic wasbeing serviced and I was reminded that while the manual is a lot more fun to drive (you obviously have more control) it still is not incredibly fast. Theres more pick up whenyou down shift from onegear to the other sinceit has more power up top (not to mention a wider range) but down low its just as torqueless as ours are. However there are dozens of cars that out perform the manual Rx8 where straight line performance is concerned. Swapping an auto for a manual solely b/c its faster is a poor decision to make. Onthe other hand doing the swap for the purpose of having more control of the Renesis would make a little more sense to me.
All in all youre better off keeping yourautomatic and waiting for turbo chargers to become available (which is supposed to be sometime next year) sinceyoure going to end up losing the same amount of money as you would in a trade for an auto to a stick. Only qualms I have w/that is youll most likely wear all your parts sooner plus you warranty will be eradicated -- not to mention run the risk of losing all that money you put into the turbo kit if youre ever in a bad accident.
