While car is cold, cranking wheel creates a shaking and knocking sound...
I really don't think something is wrong...hopefully.
I get out of work, the temperature is around 20 degrees F. I start my car up, and in order to get out of the parking lot, I need to crank the wheel 100% either way. While doing that and moving, I get a rocking/shaking feeling in the steering wheel and car. A very audible "KNOCK" is coming from the front end of the car. It does not happen when car is warmed up.
At first I thought it was the tires, being cold...maybe a slight flat spot...but the tire doesn't even do a full revolution when this happens. Also doesn't happen in a straight line. My idea is power steering....anybody else?
Also, a search rendered nothing, but then again, cold, knock, steering, noise brought up a bunch of non-helpful threads....

I thought i had the same thing however it just happens that it was the way the tires were grabbing the pavement at my particuar apt. complex...when cold coming out of anywhere else it does not do it just on this pavement when the ouside temp is (yeah not cold) aroudn 45 or so or lower

I plan on getting my camera out maybe tomorrow to see if I can get it on tape...maybe see something specific on the tires or something. *Shakes fist at cold weather*

I have the same problem and still get it from time to time, either in car parking lots---slow turns from rest, or on certain roads. I think it's a combination of the wheels on road surface and maybe the brake pads rubbing against the wheels? I don't know...

Temp was in the 20s this morning, and I noticed a really strange sound when backing out of the driveway. I turned off the radio because I was concerned.
It kept up as I drove down the road a bit then it quit. So in my case I'm guessing cold flat spots on tires, especially since the tire pressure sensor idiot light was on due to the drop in temperature.

yeah if it was sort of like a thump for a bit then after a few miles it stopped prob some flat sports on the tires! I get that too every once and awhile

I had the idea of flat spots, but it doesn't seem to be happening with a revolution of the tire...more like every 1/4 to 1/2 revolution. I still have yet to get my camera on this...I just stop taking turns too tight when leaving. After driving for less than 10 seconds, the noise/knocking stops, so weird...

I suspect your tires are scrubbing a bit while at full lock. It can be normal or it can mean you need an alignment. It all depends on the steering geometry. All the cars I've ever owned do this to one degree or another, and wide tires make it worse. Its more noticeable in cold weather because the rubber is cold and hard and it doesn't grip as evenly.

Noticed this while looking through the TSB list, and it might apply to your problem --->> TSB for "NOISE FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE / STABILIZER CONTROL LINK BROKEN"
(yes, I did repost from the other thread.

Hummmm...that does seem interesting. It's so weird, this problem hasn't happened in a while, since it's not been so cold...we've been getting 40 degree F recently at night...silly cold.
