Why buy this car?
It gets the same MPG as a truck with a V8.. I could get a 350Z or a 2003 accord with more HP and has better fuel efficiency. I dont get it.. mazda said this car would be more fuel efficient but if people are getting 16 MPG in a sports car it doesnt make sense..

check out the cars that perform similarly and you will find the mileage to be in line. This week I got 18.2 MPG in town. I got 17-18 mpg in my 2001 Millennia S and 19-20 mpg in my BMW 328 and 18 mpg in my Lexus ES 300 on the same stretch of road over the years.
Look at Road and Track Aug p.136 Most cars that do 0-60 in this time get 12-21 mpg in overall driving.
The new Honda coupe 0-60 is in the 7's and the mileage dropped to 20 city in the manual form.
As far as horsepower is concerned, consider the 0-60 runs in Road and Track and compare the horsepower figures of those cars. Look at the 350Z and the RX 8 times and look at the horsepower. The weight of the car has a lot to do with it.
You need to drive an 8. I drove other cars and was amazed at the handling characteristics - especially in town (where I drive most) Also, check the article out in the discussion thread RX 8 vs 350z review. It compares these two cars well. ALso, it is comparing cars with a 50 horsepower difference.

Oh no, not another thread like this again! Zio, I hope you dont get flamed for posing this question, cause its been beaten to death on this board. ![Wink](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
Anyway, here is my opinion on the RX-8 if you are interested (I am a 350z owner).
1. MPG - The RX-8's fuel economy is not bad, I find it acceptable for a sports car. At 18 MPG City, it is only 1MPG lower than an Auto 350Z. If you read some threads, you will find owners that are indeed getting the MPG on the sticker. Give the RX-8 time, these cars need to be "broken in". The MPG of the 350Z is nothing to write home about either.
2. Style - While I think the 350Z and RX-8 are equals in this regard, I dont think anyone will find the Accord to be as beautiful as these two aesthitically. However, if you are not into the sports car look, then this might be a moot point.
3. Utility/Practicality - Able to actually seat 4 adults confortably. While the Accord can seat 5, its a sedan not a sports car. The 350Z can only seat 2, so its intended for the single guy/gal, or for those who have the luxury of having a weekend car.
4. Handling - The RX-8 takes this one, with its 50/50 weight distribution it will slice through canyon roads like knife through butter. The 350Z has good handling as well... but the Accord ... err well its a FWD sedan ... nose dive here we come.
5. Torque - This is one of the few areas where the competition beats it. Both 350Z and Accord have V6 engines, so thats a given. However, the RX-8 compensates by having a free-reving engine that loves to be revved all the way to that lofty 9000 rpm redline. Combined with an excellent shifter, this car is a joy to drive.
Really, the Accord shouldnt be in the comparison. Beyond its V6 engine, its not a sports car.
Buy what you think is most appropriate for your situation. If you are a practical guy, buy the Accord. If you want some V6 grunt in a sports car, get the 350Z. If you want some practicality, but want a sports car not another bread-and-butter sedan, the RX-8 is the clear choice.
Go test drive the RX-8 and see for yourself, you might like what you find.

I'm upset about the HP controversey as much as the next guy, but jeebus how can you even compare a RX-8 to a Honda Accord.
Performance is more important to most owners than HP.
Take the Lotus Elise for example, it makes just under 200 hp and has has the performance numbers to match a 500 hp Viper.

Stupid question time again? How about you ask yourself this question and make a decision. Dont be a pansy *** that needs people to affirm his decision. Make your own and live with it.

I know my question is not related to the thread...
A guy with a S2000 found out that I'm getting an RX8, so he wants to race me for $2G... Would an RX8 have a chance or does it depends on the driver?

Bottom feeder
yes let's change the topic, because the previous one sucks.... pansy *** questions.. grrrr..
anyway.. that's an interesting proposition.. but I don't think the RX-8 has a chance at beating the s2000 (given both drivers have same skill level). I've driven both cars, and the honda feels stronger overall, according to my butt dyno, anyway![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
hey don't flame me anyone, I'm an RX-8 owner and nut too, but when it comes down to 2G's I'll give a realistic response, not a love-blinded one.

I never said the 350z or a honda accord was better than an RX-8 I was just simply wondering why the fuel efficiency was so low for such a small engine, 1.3L. Anyway thanks for the flames :D.
Oh and why would it be a stupid question if the cost of maintaining this car would be so high. This car gets worse fuel economy than my mazda tribute.

Zio, go read a bit about the rotary and you will know that this isn't just a 1.3L engine like any you've seen before.
And i agree with others, if you consider an Accord with a RX-8.... BUY THE ACCORD.

Well, let me just say that those that bash the new Accord coupe haven't driven the new Accord coupe in the V6 6speed. If I'm not mistaken, doesn't take the RX-8 like 6.2 seconds to get to 60? The Accord gets there in 5.9 seconds. I have driven both cars (yesterday), and from experience, the Accord does feel more powerful. The handling feel of both cars are not far apart if at all. The biggest thing that I noticed between the two cars is the styling. The Accord blends in without the optional underbody spoilers while the RX-8 simply stands out. If you want to be noticed everywhere you go, the RX-8 is your car. I personally like the Accord with the underbody spoilers. That said, I am going to drive the two cars a couple of more times before I make my choice. If you haven't bought an RX-8 yet, I suggest you do the same.
The replies in this post seem like YOUR car is better than all others. I have been to many forums in the past and everyone thinks their car is the best without driving the others. Don't believe me, look for yourself. It's hard to get a fair assessment from someone that already owns the car.
