Why does the 8 erupt gas when you let the pump turn itself off on fill-up?

The title is probably HORRIBLY titled, and just plain confusing, but maybe the body will make more sense.

Out of every car I've ever filled up with, this is the only one that whenever it's time for it to automatically stop filling up *I honestly have no idea how it knows to stop...pressure/liquid touching it/etc..?* but it will click off, then a good 3 or 4 cups worth of gas just fly out of my filler neck.

Now, as you can probably guess, searching for this rendered hundreds of "MPG" threads......anybody else have this issue? It's happened pretty consistently with every gas station I fill up at. I've learned to guesstimate when it will be full, and go 1/4 throttle on the pump.

mine does all the time so I also have to guestimate how much gas should go into the car and then really slow down the flow when I think I'm near it.

normally when I fill when I'm at about 2 to 3 gallons left and I start slowing down the flow at about 12 and I haven't had a problem since.

Ya i have noticed the same thing. I do what your talking about. I go to about 40 bucks n then slow it down to half or so and then it doesnt spill everywhere. First time i did it went all over me lol i was so happy. Any reasons why this is happening? Ways to solve?

Somebody else had an issue like this. Just don't remember the remedy or if they ever found the cause or a solution.
Does it do it at one particular pump or have you tried other stations and it does the same thing?
I've had it happen maybe twice in 4 years, but I would attribute it to the pump itself.

I think the person had a problem in the filler neck as I recall, but I'll never find that thread.
Think they changed out his filler neck or they changed the angle.............or something.

And me...............not but a small burp once in 4 years.

Happens to me, too, but it depends on the gas station. If I turn the pump down to the lowest setting, it's OK. I usually know about how much it's going to take, and slow it when there's a gallon or two to go.

I remember those other posts. It has something to do with the vent line. One person said that he had that problem (on a different car, I think) and it was caused by spiders clogging the vent line.

I've never had this happen and use the "clip" to fill up at least 90% of my trips to the pump

A bad design flaw that's been b*tched about on here before. I just estimate how much gas I need and then take over manual pumping when it gets close to where full is. I make sure not to pump very fast lest I let gas flow down the side of the car. It is really easy to do that.

Happened to me once, but it was the gas station. Defiantly worth it though, got free gas :D

Odd though. check with the dealer tell them to fix it.

I've had an 04 for over 3 years now and this has never happened to me ever. 99% of my fill-ups are using the clip on as high as it goes for about 11 gallons or 3/4 a tank.

Is this only a problem with later models, did something change?

It has to be a problem with vent and not able to get enough vacuum.

It works through detecting a vacuum. A suction is applies to a vent in the handle and out a hole near the end of the nozzle. When the fuel rises to block the hole on the end of the nozzle a vacuum is created and once detected a mechanism clicks the handle off.

never happens to mine and i wedge my gas cap in the handle to make it go faster, never spilled a drop. alot of stations have removed the clips in the handles for this very reason around here so i use the gas cap and just deal with the attendant yelling at me. if the don't speak english i don't care enough to listen.

Ah, thank you very much!

I know it wouldn't be the stations here, because I've been to pretty much all the ones in this city, plus while traveling, and it still does it. Good to know I'm not alone in the situation. It's not like it's HORRIBLE OMG WTF, just weird and I was very curious.

Yup, the vent line is the problem. On my Protege5, water got in the vent line, and when it would drop below freezing, it would freeze over and seal the vent line, so the overflow would happen with ~half a gallon of gas. Pumping in the winter was painful...VERY painful. If this is only occurring when you get near full, I would suspect maybe the vent line is cracked, letting in air from a difference source, causing it to not detect the full status until too late.

I have never had an overflow with my 8 at all.

A friend of mine just had this problem with his RX8 (mine has never done this). Turned out there was something wrong inside the gas-tank. Bring it to the dealer and show them it spits.. Assuming its not the gas station's pumps.. they should fix it as a safety issue.

I wouldn't say it's something I'm concerned enough to drive about an hour away to get fixed, but yeah, it definitely sucks when gas falls down the side of your car....good thing I don't smoke

My bumper to bumper warranty just ran out. Drats. It's a pain, but at least one can work around it.

This happened to me....startied off fine then about 6 months after having the car (2006) is starting happening everytime. They tried a few things to fix it....they did not work. In the end they (dealer) put a new tank in...... said there were a bunch of tanks made out of spec causing the issue.
All I know is after the new tank was put it the issue never returned ( 3 years now).

I had this happen only once. Your squezing the hose to hard now just just hold it and let it do its thing. Then it will slow down and pump a few more times before its done and now you filled her up with out spilling any
