Why does the 8 erupt gas when you let the pump turn itself off on fill-up?

IDK I had this happen to me when hold the handle to hard. The handle did not kick my had back the last few clicks just before it stops. So if over filled and spilled. From now on I just hold it tight enough so it kicks back and dont over fill. Also I add premix after I top off and I over filled that time too lol

Ever since I owned this car I noticed it is a bitch to try and "top off". Every car is different, but most of the time I am able to get the tank almost 100% full up to the neck. I attempt to do this, to obtain max range from that tank of fuel, and to prolong the need to refill.
In my Denali, I am able to get fuel to the very top of the filler neck with no spillage at all, with moderate effort. Same for my wife's Envoy. In my rx-7 it is a bit more difficult, but still not too hard to pull off. In my wife's old Millenia it was very difficult and required much patience, but could be done with enough effort.
I have found the rx8 to be the most challenging vehicle ever to try and top off in this manner. Basically the car will be on a dead empty tank but yet the pump wants to click off with only 12-13 gallons filled, when I know for a fact it could easily hold 1-2 gallons (15-40 miles worth) more. From that point on, it basically refuses to accept any more fuel, no matter how slight the rate, and more than 1 or 2 attempts to fill beyond this point results in a massive slosh of fuel being belched back out.
I have chalked it up to part of the car's personality and it is not a big issue since I rarely take the car on long trips anyway, but an oddity nonetheless.
