Why does it seem blue cars are hard to come by?
Hi all,
I'm a new member and just got a blue RX-8 about 2 weeks ago. It took a long time for my dealer to find one. I pre-ordered one way back in july and just after it was ready to be loaded onto the boat in Japan, it somehow got damaged, so my dealer had to re-schedule a new one to be built. It would be a month late. But then after my dealer discovered there was a delay on blue cars for some reason, he managed to find a freshly shipped one at some other dealership way out in the middle of nowhere.
Well, now I finally got my blue RX-8. But I'm befuddled because 3 years ago I ordered a new blue IS300 and had a similar long waiting period for it to be delivered. The dealer at that time had lots of other colors, just not blue. My thoughts are that blue is not an unpopular color, because people who saw my blue IS300 drooled over it then, and it's the same with my new blue RX-8. And I can't see how it could be a manufacturer problem with getting blue paint, although it seemed to be when my dealer tried to schedule my 8 to be rebuilt.
So do any of you guys have any ideas? Why are new blue cars hard to find?

I bought the first blue RX-8 in Las Vegas, NV. People love and comment on the color a;; the time but there are really not that many around. I am only guessing but I suspect it has to do with what dealers perceive will sell fastest. I too had to wait awhile for my preordered Touring package. When a Sports version came in I went down to look at it and fell in love with the roofline and the extra headroom so I bought it. Glad I did because I got in on the horsepower $500.00 debit card and free scheduled maintenance. Had I not done so I would have missed that rebate altogether.

I bought the first blue 8 sold in the valley where I live in SoCal; I haven't seen another one since. No complaints though; "Blue Thunder" turns head where ever I go. We have all kinds of expensive cars around here. Nobody looks twice at vettes, porches, mercedes, bmw, jaguar, etc. but my blue 8 gets attention like crazy. The dealer where I bought it hasn't gotten another blue one in; they're always the other colors. Not sure why.
I'm very happy with the car and highly recommend it to anyone who is a sports car enthusiast.

I'm not sure what the long term plan is, but blue is not a "launch colour" in Europe at least. Those ordering red, silver, black and titanium get first dibs. I'll have to wait an extra month or so for my bluey.

I have yet to see the Winning Blue in person. I have been to two dealerships in town and from what I am told, the dealers have no problem selling those cars immediately. Could it be that Mazda is keeping tight reigns on the color ratios to avoid saturating the market with a particular color?

In my search of a winning blue MT RX-8 in Houston area I was able to see 4 different ones on lots and test drive one of them.
All the dealers said that Blue was in high demand and a real fast mover. I was able to locate several on MazdaUSA dealer allocation inventory and make a real good deal on one of them sight unseen because I already knew what it looked like.
Wouldn't you know it....within the first 2 days of ownership my wife is driving down the main street of our quaint little community and she encounters is a WINNING BLUE GT.....The only RX-8 we have seen Period.....Go figure

My blue is the only blue I've seen anywhere, ever. And I have only seen one other RX-8 on the road around here (central VA) - it was black. Other people have told me they've seen another blue, as well as a titanium in the area.

I keep seeing another blue one in downtowm Toronto. We do the high beam flash and thumbs up when we pass each other! I usually see him around King and Peter Streets. Anyone from the forum?

Initially you will have more Die Hard fans than Average Joes.
Now the Die Hard fan MUST get an RX8 and must get one soon! They are less likely to be swayed by colors. Say they had two color choices, 1) Yellow 2) Titanium Grey. The dealership doesn't have his first choice because yellow is more rare, but he's a die hard fan and has to get his RX8, so he buys the titanium grey.
Had it been Average Joe, who doesn't even know what a rotary is, color would have played a much larger factor in his decision. He'd have seen the Titanium Grey, not his favorite color, and moved on. But as time passes, there becomes fewer and fewer Die Hard fans without an RX8 and more Average Joes.
So now we have less Die Hards, more Average Joes.
So now, Average Joe comes to the dealership, sees the initially rare Yellow and Winning Blue RX8s. Color plays a much larger factor to Average Joe, and he's more likely to buy an RX8 now because he loves the look (including the color) of the car.
I'm an Average Joe, and I use this theory because had I not found my Winning Blue RX8 instead of a red one, I'd have moved on and purchased a different car.

I own a Blue as well. I've seen another blue on about 3 separate occasions. From responses in the SE board, I believe it was the same guy. Either way, I think this car is still pretty rare in general, so it's hard for me to determine which one is harder to come by.
If anything, I would say Nordic Green is the rarest in my area, as I've now seen just about every color but that here in Orlando. There is a possibility that I saw one, and wrote it off as black...but I'm pretty sure that just I haven't seen one.
O_town...you drive a Blue as well?

Mine is blue also. My wife and one of my sons liked the Titaninum and I must admit it looks nice but not as nice as the blue. I searched for over a month to find a blue one here in Dallas, and I also drove by several Mazda dealers in Chicago while there on business. I wasn't sure if I would like the color as none of the pictures of any of the RX8s do them justice. Once I saw the blue, I knew that was the one I wanted. So I bought it just over a month ago and have not regretted it for a minute. I have not seen any other blue ones in the Dallas area so far. Have only seen about 5 or 6 in total.

texlaw, I agree with you that the pictures of the blue color don't do it justice. Blue is my favorite color, which is why I require a blue car, but when I saw the pictures of the blue one online, I started considering getting a different color. But when I told my dealer I would really like to see a blue one in person, strangely enough, the very next day a blue one came in and he told me to come down and take a look at it. As soon as I saw it, I knew that was the color I would have! A few months later I got my own blue 8.

f1 tech, I got it at Arlington Mazda (Rosenthal) on Glebe road. I payed full MSRP for it and it came to about $34,400. At the time I ordered it in July, the ones which were available at the time were marked up $2000 above MSRP. But since my car was on order, he was able to get me just MSRP. At the time I got it, Oct. 5th, I probably could have talked the price down, but I figured it would have only been a few hundred bucks and my dealer really worked hard to get me a blue one, so I just payed for it and left. Right now, you might be able to get it for less than MSRP since they are more readily available now.

f1 tech, by the way, if you go there, find the guy named Abed. He's really nice and will work really hard to make you happy. He's the top sales guy there. In fact they have an employee of the month plaque and his name is on every month except 3 of them! Oh, and tell him I sent you (Justin), not that I'm getting anything out of it, though.

Strong Bad, yes, I have a Winning Blue RX-8. Also, I agree with you, the Nordic Green seems to be the rarest color around. There were tons of Yellow RX-8s at the dealership....not my color. Looks like we have a few Blue Babes in Orlando!

My dealer told me he was hesitant to order any Blue cars because he wasn't sure how good it would look (remember no color chips were available).
Mine was the first car delivered in Georgia and it is Winning Blue. After the dealer saw it on delivery day, he realized he made a bad decision; he says that everyone wants the blue now. I have not seen any other blue ones on the road.

Have been to 3 dealerships, and finally was able to see another Winning Blue (other than mine). Out of 12 RX-8's on their lot, it was the only Blue they still had.
At least now I can say I've seen all the colors. Next color I would love to have is 'Elara's' Nordic Green. Another awesome color with the sun shining on it.
