Why is the horn so loud?

yes the 6 looks like a great car. Too bad its powered by Ford. Not to pick too much on Ford but the same would go for GM as well if GM owned Mazda. Sure wished Mazda were on their own but I guess its all business and who has the most bucks to win.

yes most everything they touch turns to crap and that's why they don't retain their value on their vehicles. Same goes for GM. They are giving $11,000 or more incentives off the 2004s now just to get them off their lots. What a shame. You don't see Mazda giving big advertized discounts on RX-8s? Nope!! These cars hold their value. We have a nice ride, ah ... Ford horn and all.

Those cars are not really made in the US. They are from Canada or Mexico. I think there are only a few vehicles called American cars that are actually made in the US. I think Mazda could build them in the US too. Honda does it so why not the rest? Interesting situation on where vehicles are made then.

Slam Ford all you want, but if it weren't for them greenlighting further rotary development and the continuation of the RX line, we wouldn't be chatting in this forum or driving our RX-8's now.

Does Ford really have a veto over rotary development? Tell me it's not so!
My understanding is that Ford has a large stake in Mazda and is part of the production/design for certain models (the 6 and the Tribute, I think), but Mazda is still in charge of the 3, the Miata, and the RX-8. Is that correct?

Many of the Ford family vehicles share certain bits and pieces- some more than others. I remember seeing some Miata trim and convertible parts in a high-end Jaguar once. I've heard rumors that the next Focus will be based on the Mazda3 platform, which is also currently shared by the Volvo S40. The RX8 was built as an entirely new platform from the ground up though.

Good point about Ford making the R&D funds to the RX-8 going into production. Sure was an interesting discussion about a horn. I knew Ford was into controlling Mazda before I bought the RX but the salesman tried to make it seem that Mazda was in total control but that isn't really true I think. So none of us really knows the total story and how Ford puts its parts into Mazda and its influence. Like I said before GM is not any better than Ford. So the answer to what is the horn so loud? Well because it just is.

I still would be a bit leary on buying a Mazda 6 knowing the block was a Ford engine. Yet the 6 does look like a fine car. Doesn't Mazda make any V blocks? This is my first Mazda and the first rotary and so I hope its designed to last a long time.

This is another interesting difference between the North American and Australian cars....our horn doesn't sound at all regardless of how many times we push the fob button.....

until the day I die
I find the horn scares the sh*t out passengers when they get out & you lock it. Drives my wife nuts. I always do it when she least expects it. Not on purpose, of course...

I thought the first press locked the doors; the second press sets the alarm.
So you would need to press the lock button twice for the alarm to be set.
Can anyone confirm if this is correct?

Woah...doesn't anybody read their manuals anymore?
You press the lock button once to lock the doors. If you press the lock button again within 5 seconds, the horn will sound and the hazard lights flash once. This was designed as an aural confirmation that you've locked the doors.
I love oral....ooops! :p

The horn does scare the **** out of passengers when locking the car! But I love the sound of the horn, I had a Mazda 929 before the 8 and the car looked badass and big with the rims I had on it... but all you heard when I pressed the horn was a liittle sissy horn that made the car sound like a tonka toy!
