Well they could be testing a joint Toyota-Mazda engine - perhaps a turbocharged 2.xT for the Miata for a refresh or another RWD car like the 86?

If that is the case, it speaks volumes the strength of the rx8's 15 years old chassis architecture. It's like BMW using the e46 chassis to test the M2 Competition S55 engine.

Is it bad that I foolishly hope it’s not an I6 and something rotary related?

something with more zoom?

Unless they solve the emission issues, I can't see it happening.

And like I have said quite a few times, the economies of scale is just not there for a rotary engine. Unless they decide to put rotaries in Mazda 3, they will struggle to make money with a rotary sports car.

Perhaps they’re testing the new power plant for the 2024 MR2 (Co-Developement?)

I'll bet you it's the I-6 collaboration with Toyota.

The '8 already has double wishbones up front and we already know an I-6 will fit in it.
