Why People Think 8s are Slow
#103
I believe you missed the point. The thread isn't about the RX8 being fast, it's about people thinking it's slower than it is. Compared to the civics and SUVs that think they are winning non-races against my 8, the 8 is not slow.
Is the 8 slow compared to a GTO? Sure. Is a GTO slow compared to a Veyron? Yes. Comparing an 8 to a GTO in straight line speed is ridiculous, and pointless.
I don't get a lot of GTOs or GT-Rs or Vipers pulling along side me at the stop lights. If guys with cars like that think my 8 is slow, fair enough, compared to those rides my 8 is slow. But it's different when a kid in a Civic thinks he's faster than than an 8 because he walked away from an 8 that wasn't racing him.
I don't care that there are faster cars out there than the 8. If I wanted a muscle car I wouldn't have bought an 8. I would only care about this on the track or drag strip. On the road, I'm not intimidated by faster cars. They're powerful but they can't tap all that power on the street, and 9 times out of 10 my car has the faster driver.
On the street I can get from point A to point B a lot faster than most people no matter what they drive, and I don't mean by speeding. The 8 can be plenty fast when used the right way. Straight line drag races are not the right way to use this car.

You may be faster then most civics, but not Sis, and not even V6 accords.

Some of those Muranos can trap 92mph and a Civic Si might trap 95 mph apparently.
I would be close!

Just take a look here at 0-60 and 1/4 mile times for a lot of "fast" cars. The 8 isn't at the bottom of the list, it's average at worst. Just because some cars are faster than the 8 doesn't mean the 8 is slow. For any given car A, you can find car B that is faster. And the Civic Si obviously isn't faster, it's not even close. The Murano didn't make the list, because it shouldn't.

What am embarassment, to think that 2 people care so much what a few rx8 drivers think.
Some people aren't strong enough to stand alone, apart from their vehicles. It's who they are.
Other people, somehow allow their feelings to get hurt, because they too are unable to distinguish between themselves and the stupid car they drive.
Just stop being a bunch of nancys, this is sillyness.

plenty of people here make good points....
The thread is not horrible, just about expressing how you feel about other people thinking that the 8 is a slow car I guess.

2004 Mazda RX-8 5.8 14.49 (6 speed) (MT Mar ‘04)
Uhm no, that must have been like downhill with a heated track when it was below freezing outside, i have seen many many rx8s at the track, they do not break into 14s, and if they do it is 14.9, which is amazing anyways i was shocked when i saw car and driver get an R3 to run 14.9.
Whereas new Civic Sis run about 14.7s at best but more consistently break into 14s
But to be fair i never saw one of those Sis run better then 15.1 personally. But out on the street everytime it was SI V 8, it went to the Si everytime

The 0-60 and 1/4 figures from the magazine shouldn't be taken seriously, I mean if you really dump your clutch, or even slipping it, at 7000 rpm to achieve those number, you're an idiot.
Nothing is worth for me to pay thousands for a new transmission.
Regular runs, rx-8 is only even with civic si and rsx type s. If you're an auto, then you will left behind.
As far as on the street, when most V8 equipped SUV wants to pass you to get in your lane, that 0-40 mph the rx-8 usually doesn't stand a chance, again, unless you dump your clutch, which again, will prove that you're an idiot.
So no, rx-8 is not a fast car.

However, with a FWD vehicle, not that you don't have to launch hard, but simply because of traction, they can't dump the clutch at a high rpm like you can with RWD vehicles.
So because of that, it's easier on the car to drive a car like the Civic Si to the magazine achieved time simply because the transmission won't take as much abuse as you would with a 7000 rpm launch.

I've dump my clutch at 6k. But hey that's with some shitty *** tires Breaking traction is a good thing imo because it reduces stress on parts then if you just keep slipping it.
I've actually read that somewhere...
Kersh4w launched his car at like 5k and got 14.5 1/4 mile.

Is it easy? Hell no. Possible? Yes, and it has been proven by several members on the board, most recently kersh4w. They posted the slips, and it's legit.
I managed a couple sub 6 second 0-60 runs as measured by my Gtech in my old '04 RX8. It had to be a perfect 6500-7000 RPM launch, perfect wheel spin to keep the rotary high in its power band, and a perfect 1-2 shift at redline rapping second out to 9K RPMs.
The reason the RX8 is perceived as getting beaten on the street so often is because of trapspeed. The highest trapspeed youre going to see out of a stock RX8 is 95-96 mph. It will usually hover around 93-94mph.
When you hear stories about Civics and Camrys and SUV's beating an RX8 to the onramp after they've left from a light, it's because they have a higher trapspeed. MICHGoBlue hit on it earlier... what he's seeing is how a low torque, peaky hp engine can post a pretty damn decent 0-60 and quarter mile time IF you rag the hell out of it with a massive, smokey, high RPM launch. If you don't launch like that, and you're going from a "street start", you HAVE to compare trap times. That will tell you who will win... every... damn... time. I promise you that.
I hope more people understand this. I think this is the "answer" to this thread.
I can give a bunch more examples, and talk about this forever, but I would bore people to death, I'm sure.

Trap speed isn't the whole story on roll ons. The 8 gets killed in the 1/4 mile trap because the redline 3 to 4 shift before 90 gets it well out its powerband. On a roll, I've been fine with some of the "faster" cars mentioned here, but not if I see anything south of 7000rpm - normally achieveable to stay there if you shift at fuel cut-off rather than redline. Still not a super fast car, but certainly entertaining.
Otherwise, the stupidity on this thread and some of the comparisons is best left ignored.
Oh, and every major mag has tested a 5.9 14.5 RX8, not just MT.
