Why SHOULDN'T I buy an RX-8?
#52
Don't pay too much for it. It's a great car, but only at a certain price point. If you are getting it from your parents, then you might be able to score a good deal, if not, then sharpen your negotiating skills and get the best deal you can.

I am usually very hard on Mazda and the RX8 as most here already know. I can say that the single greatest thing about the car is the fact that my biggest headaches have been nuisance issues. That says a lot about a car if your biggest problem last year was a brake squeal. Without a doubt my experience has been that the RX8 meets or exceeds all my expectations. If there is one overwhelming deterrence from purchasing an RX8 it would be the resale value situation. Last years garage sale on RX8's really hurt the secondary market. If you plan on buying and keeping the 8 then I say go for it. If you can see yourself getting bored or fed up in 12 to 18 months.....I would stay away.

I think when several rags commend a car or it makes the best this or that list there is some validity. If the car was crap they might not come out and say it that way since they are beholden to the manufacturers for advertising dollars but you would get the idea. C&D seems fairly good except for some of their stupid subjective categories like “Gotta Have it Factor”. If you want an advertiser dollar free perspective look at The Truth About Cars review here:

Perhaps I’m used to cars just having some problems but unless the tranny blows or there are major issues such as the electrical system or expensive things going up then I think you have a pretty good car. Also if you are buying a first model year car (my last two have been late first model year cars) you really should expect some problems. Cars are only getting more complicated as the years go one and are going to have greater chances of having problems.
Right now for me it’s a race between getting a great deal on a 03 M3 with SMG or a great deal on a 06 RX-8. I figure I have about 2-4 months before Mazda drops the big cash on 06’s so once I see 4k off on 06’s I’m jumping on it.
The only thing that concerns me about the RX-8 is flooding. Since my wife can’t drive a stick I’ll need to move the car out of the drive a couple of days a week or park on the street (not going to happen) so I’m going to be sitting there waiting for the engine to warm up before I can shut down. I can already hear the raft of **** my wife would give me if I told her “Looks like I flooded it, its going to have to be towed to a dealer” on my brand new car.

I like the "Cup Warmer" but I'm a coffee drinker. If it's a cold beverage it's beer. In which case drink FASTER! and you shouldn't be drinking beer when you're detailing the car. You might get armorall on the leather!

The RX8 has quirks just like any other car. A lot depends on what you're really in the market for and then determine whether the RX8 fills the bill, or move on to something else altogether. Make a list of wants/needs and strengths/weaknesses for cars you're considering, surf some objective reviews on the web and also similar clubs like this for owners' insights. When all is said and done, it's not a perfect science and you may still just have to follow your gut instinct. Nothing is perfect, but the RX8 is very versatile and does a lot of things well; a multi-tasker in the sports car world. Happy hunting!

I've been driving my mom's for a few days, and I find it interesting that they gave the car 040s for shoes instead of 050s. I was able to tell just how much worse they were than the 050s that come stock on the S2k. I went online to tire rack, and sure enough, way worse ratings. It just seems odd. First tire change will have to be to T1-Rs.

Good idea, drive the car a while, then after 3 or four days switch back to one of your other cars..that way you can compare, the feel, the look, the public reactions. Can you keep any of the warrenty? (You might consider keeping it in your Mom's name, unless there is an inheritance problem, should she die...). This is a car to keep, take to rallys, and enjoy it as much 20 years from now as you do now! And don't listen to piston monkey's who say its what's under the hood that counts - the hood is not where we keep our engines!

LoL...i find it funny that so many have chimed in their hatred toward the car in because of CUP HOLDERS not keeping drinks cool.
Seriously, i'd love to see if ANY car would pass some people's approval. I mean, are some looking purposly for reasons to hate on the 8? I'd think someone REALLY had to dig deep for that one...
Simply stunning, really.
