Question Width of boot/trunk

Can someone who gets up close and personal with a RX-8 measure the "usable" width of the trunk for me??

I have a very specific requirement and if the trunk's not wide enough, the RX-8 ain't on the shopping list.

TIA

If you're looking to use it to dump bodies for the mafia, the RX-8 just might not be the right car for you.

Then again the "suicide doors" would work great with a full load of "made men" in the 8 doing a hit and a quick getaway. LOL

There is a signifigant difference between the opening and the usable width. So it depends on what you are putting in as to how that effects things.

7.5cubic feet is the usuable "size" but i'm sure you knew that .

I checked out a Mazda 6 today, HOLLY MOTHER OF GOD! The trunk could fit 2 or 3 bodies!

I was actually suprised by the size of the RX-8 trunk, especially since it is all usable since the braces do not rotate down into the trunk space as on many current models do.

It's going to be close!

I've got overall car width at 69.7 inches = 1.77m
From the attached picture I reckon the boot opening is approx 2/3 width of the car (remember those wheel arches). That puts the boot opening at very roughly 1.19m.

Just as importantly there are some nasty internal suspension humps.

I think you'll have to wait to try one in the flesh, sorry.

The back seat unfortunately does not fold down on the RX-8...

It should be close, but the Tommy Gun...errr I mean the cello case should hopefully fit in there at an angle.

The in-person test will be required, but there is always putting it in the back seat too.

That's gonna be close. The trunk was larger than I expected, but by no means large at all. A cello is a pretty damn big instrument. If the neck of the case can't fit trough the pass-thru, I don't thnk it'll make it in the trunk. Laying down in the back seat may work (diagonally? ) I think you'll have to see it in person to judge unless we have any other cello players who have seen the car on board....

If it is a small cello, as suggested by the 1.25m length, then I would think it has a chance to get put in diagonally, but you will have to just try it. Definately would fit in the back seat, though.

I wonder if anyone agrees with a roof rack - but wonder if the shape of the top shaped so that I cannot put one on the top.

It will not affect my decision of buying the 8

Just remember the 2 back seats are separated by a centre console and it is not a bench like most other coupes.

If it's a small cello, then yes, I think you would have no problem getting it in the trunk- if it's bigger, you'd have to go with the backseat. My brother plays cello, and he came with us to Detroit to see the car- I'll ask him what his impressions were.

I had written down from photos someone posted yesterday
43.25 inches which multiplied by 2.54 gives 1,098 mms,
not enough.

Also the depth was 17 inches and the width was between 9.5
to 11.5 inches, depending where you measure.

ah! awesome! i play the cello and was wondering the exact same thing; whether or not my instrument would fit in the car. this is what turned me away from the evo viii and the nissan z. when i went to see the rx8 at the auto show, it didn't look like the base of the cello would be able to pass through the trunk opening, because it's not large enough. however, i do think that, with passenger seat pushed forward a little bit, the cello could fit sitting-style in the back seat, made even easier with the suicide doors (a serious plus for me!) but, yes, the cello will probs fit with the front seat pushed forward. now the question begs, how bout keeping that leather scratchfree?:D
