Wife

My wife and I have been shopping for a new car for weeks. We more or less had decided upon the RX-8 last week after a test drive.

We arrived for our 3:30pm appointment today at the dealer to do a credit app, to see if we can get an affordable rate, and see if we can locate a car, etc.

Or so I thought.

When we got there, the dealer explained that he just got a black one in on trade, if I wanted to see what they look like in black. Unfortunately, he explained this one was already sold. Dang it!

We walked over to it, and of course it was gorgeous. I actually started to feel rather frustrated, as it seemed this deal just wasn't going to happen. Didn't know if we'd be approved, didn't know if we could get a good rate, didn't know of any black 8's in the area.

Then I noticed it had a bow on it.

Then the dealer started to laugh.

Then my wife started to laugh too, and added, "Happy birthday!"

Have you ever seen those TV shows like "Overhauling" or "While you were out?" Now I know how those people feel. You just cannot re-file your concept of reality on the spot like that, lol. You hear what people are saying, but it honestly takes awhile for your brain to get a grip on things. I'm not ashamed to admit that a few tears escaped from my eyes, though I quickly restored my proper macho facade for public display.

I still don't have a grip. There's this unbelievably beautiful RX-8 parked in my lot right now, and I just cannot accept that it's ours.

I think the only thing more beautiful than our car is my wife

Anyways, glad to be part of the family! I gotta go for another drive right now

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Yea, the wife's definately a keeper. The only troublesome aspect of the whole day is I learned how well she can lie, lol. Well, her, my insurance agent, father in law, good friend, good friend's mother, etc., etc, lol. You start looking around in hindsight and realizing how many people knew what she was up to - and fooled me completely.

As a sidenote, my father-in-law came with us for the signing (though I thought I was just bringing him to see the car and make sure he could get into the rear seats). He's on dialysis, and can't get around very well - and yet he was able to climb into and out of the back seat just fine! Those doors make it SO much easier to swing yourself into the rear seats.

Good lord, what a sweet, sweet car to drive! I love that weird, sci-fi-like warble sound at idle. And those pedals. My oh my, if you see my nick, you'll know I love to heel-and-toe. I've never, ever driven an easier heel-and-toe car. You barely have to move a muscle to blip the throttle... you just think about it, and it's done.

And I even managed to set the clock

Oh is tomorrow gonna be a fun day, lol...

Thanks again for the welcome, and congrats on your wonderful rides as well!

Congrat. on you new toy. I think with all the excitment of welcoming you to our world, we forgot to mention anything about your birthday. Happy birthday. Enjoy the car, as many said "can't wait to drive it!" feeling? It doesn't go away with this car. As for your wife, she is the best, and you need to do something nice for her. She is difintly a KEEPER.

Nice thread....GREAT wife. Now get us some pictures, so we can honor them both in proper fashion.

My wife is also the type that would pull something like that, given the opportunity. Makes marriage as enjoyable as the car. Congrats.

Congrats, and welcome to the Club.

16,000 miles, and still get excited to find any opportunity to drive her.

Does your wife have a sister?"...just kidding
When I told my wife about the RX* she thought it was nice. Before kids she used to drive an MR2....but thought that the more practical car would be the Mazda 6....also a nice car.

So I said that I would set up a test drive for both cars. I actually only told them to have the RX8 ready. 5 mins in, she's 30 over the speed limit on the highway. Her grin was bigger than mine....we bought an 8 a week later. The bet is now on to see how gets the first speeding ticket. She didn't like my point that she would actually have to have a chance to drive it in order to get a ticket.

Fantastic!

Congratulations! I have a similar story although it involves a guitar not a car - I went guitar shopping for a new acoustic with my wife last summer and showed her the one I was planning to buy (not expensive, nice, Ovation - about $500) ... but then also showed her the model that Melissa Etheridge (her favorite music artist) plays - let's just say that the price of about 10 of those adds up to my -8.

Well, the next day, I come home, go to my music studio in my house and hanging on the wall on wall-mounted guitar rack is that very guitar.

All she could say to me was "When I heard you play it in the guitar store, I knew you had to have it."

Dude, you're a lucky man. I've been married 18 years now and every year she does something to remind me why.

Very touching story! Almost brought a tear to my eye. It seems like no one has, or will ever come up with a better birthday gift than your wife. Enjoy every second of it and break her in gently.
