Will K&N Typhoon void my Warranty ?
Well, Yes, I got the "new" version of the K&N Typhoon intake. the one that HAS the CARB excemption. (you know, the one that looks like the RB one)
So, Im wondering if I bring the car in for service, can they void my warranty?
I mean this Intake I have is "perfectly" legal.
Just wondering now.
Thanks

depends on your service writer. mine told me that right now mazda is pretty loose when it comes to mods. he said that as long as the part doesnt directly involve a particular failure, ie you lower your car and now the engine needs to be replaced, mazda usually overlooks these things.
one thing i have found is if you are real cool and upfront with your service guys, they are usually pretty cool with you.
i brought my 8 in for 3 tsb's, reflash, oil change, and warranty work on my radio display and a/c controls. they had my 8 for 3 days as they had to wait for some parts, but when i came in to get it, i ended up not having to pay for the oil change. i made sure that within a few days i brought my service guy and all the techs 2 dozen donuts to say thank you for the great work.
because of this, i will be having the first under car heat recall performed by them, and they will have their master mechanic do the work.
when i was talking to the service writer about some of my work, i asked him specifically what mazda's stand was on aftermarket performance accessories. asked about springs, intake, exhaust, and was told shouldn't be a problem.
of course, every dealer is different, every service person is different, just try to build a good relationship and you should be fine

I always hear people saying this, and while its true, what actualy happens in these cases might be differnt than you think.
If you have a car with a mod, lets say a cat-back exhaust. You take it to the dealer for service, the dealer voids your warrenty and says its cause of your cat-back. You tell him "you have to prove it was my cat-back that caused my problem"...
This is the tricky part, he (the dealer/car maker) doesnt have to prove that YOUR cat-back caused YOUR car to have the problem, he just has to be able to show that A cat-back caused the same problem in A car like yours.
Does that make sense?
Also as far as mazda being cool about mods, I have heard quite the opposite. There was an RX8 that had an aftermarket body kit installed, they voided his corrosion warrenty. There was another one that had Aftermarket wheels/brake pads, they voided the warrenty on his suspension and didnt fix his rusty rotors as they have on other cars.
So take it as it comes, I personaly always find a cool service writer and make friends when i start takin my car in stock. I always make sure the car looks good so it shows that I really take care of my car, then when I start to mod I have less to worry about. I also do as much of the required service myself as I can.
feel free to comment if you dont agree.

This may be one of those 'dumb' questions but thought I'd ask........
What about adding 'MazdaSpeed' parts (I.e. - shocks and springs)? Will Mazda consider that a warranty violation?......I would 'assume' not as they are the ones making and selling the parts, right?

These parts are in 3 differnt categorys, Green Orange and Blue i think, something to that effect.
As long as the mazdaspeed parts are installed by a dealer or factory authorized tech. they wont void the warranty, and they come with their own warrenty.
For example: lets say the flywheel on the car STOCK is covered under your 4yr warranty that came with the car, you replace it with the mazdaspeed flywheel that comes with a 1 yr warranty. If you have any problems with your motor they will be covered under your 4yr warranty. if you have any problems with the flywheel itself, they will be covered under the 1yr warranty from mazdaspeed. unlike the factory flywheel that is covered under the 4yr warranty.
make sense.

Yes sir.
That's kinda what I thought. Good info though that there are the color categories....wonder if they picked that up from the Homeland Security folks?!?!?
Anyways, I guess that when it comes to the suspension mods I'm contemplating (springs, sways, strut braces) I'll probably stick with the MazdaSpeed stuff since I still have 3.5 years left on my warranty. But......I really do want an intake (just haven't really decided between Revi and new K&N) so I'll hope that I don't have any issues associated with the engine....or I guess I could alway throw the old intake back on (unless the computer is so smart it will tell on me! - Hello Dave)

First of all I have to tell them to "fix the Brakes please, the sound is getting a little annoying"
Second I will say "The mpg on this car is "kinda" poor, is there a new flash out something like R Flash or whatever? If possible can you guys please do one for me ?"
Hmm wonder will that work ?
and my car just got fuxking hit yesterday ..... not really "hit" , more like a "big *** scratch on the side due to crappy no skill asswipe drivers ..." , I really want to kill him/her. Too bad I werent there when my car got ....... sigh .....

jw nyc, i have the 1st version of the k&n typhoon on an 04 8 that i never took in for the ecu recall. I heard the problem with the 1st k&n intake had to do with the ecu not letting in enough air, so since i didnt update that is their any reason i should get a new k&n intake??
jw if u know, thnks man.

I really really have no idea whats going on, when it first happened I was like "wtf is going on ?" Lucky no cars around me that time and I just start it again w/o problems.
but its not suppose to stall like that.
I will tell the service tech tomorrow about this, no it has nothing to do with the new intake I have, I got the problem with JUST stock AIRBOX. Plus crappy mileage on my 8, I guess that should be enough "reason" for them to give me a newer flash.

quoted today from "Jim Ellis Mazda, Marietta, GA"
Hey - just came back from getting my regular maintenance done at the dealer, and this is what I was told when I asked a similar question:
Q: "Will adding something like a K&N air box mod void my warranty?"
A: "If you have *any* mods done to your powertrain, it is company policy to void the warranty, and we cannot accept it in for service"
... Dang, that sounds harsh! Do they really expect everyone to drive around stock?

Ok, I came back from the service. and the service guys "dont give a damn" about what kind of intake I have in my car. as long as it does not break the other parts. (like engine, etc)
I have the CARB Excempted intake tho. not sure about the others.

The bottom line is, there must be a causal connection between the mod and the failure. If the mod causes the failure, the failure will not be covered by the warranty. If the mod does not cause the failure, the warranty should still cover the failure.
Legally, it's not a question of voiding the warranty or not voiding it. The warranty will always exist according to its terms. It's a question of whether the warranty actually extends to cover damages caused by a modified part, and typically it does not.
I can readily picture a dealer trying to avoid warranty work on a failed tranny by blaming an air intake, but I can also readily picture the customer winning that fight through demonstrating that, as a matter of engineering fact, there was no connection between the two things.
The dealer should have the burden of proof on the issue, and it's one thing for him to bluster and protest and try to fight you, and another for him to win if it goes up through corporate or legal channels. Whether it's worth it to fight that hard, to either side, is another matter.
And I'm not talking completely out of my ***: Although I don't do Magnusson-Moss work, I've been practicing law for 16 years. When I was a mere pup I used to represent a major Japanese auto manufacturer and various dealers in Lemon Law litigation. And sometimes it was very hard to establish legally that customer abuse caused a problem, even when we knew it to be true.
Also, as a customer back in 1992 or so, I once had a K&N intake on my Miata, and my clutch wore out after a ridiculously short time; maybe 10,000 miles. I had not been dumping the clutch or racing the car or riding the clutch or anything, and I've never worn out any other clutches before or since. My dealer tried to blame the K&N but I sweet-talked the service manager, and he replaced the clutch under warranty. (I later sent him a very nice letter which he framed and hung on the wall.)
So I think a lot of it depends upon your attitude: If you can convince the service manager that you're a good person who doesn't abuse his car and explain intelligently why the intake has no connection to the warranty claim, you will often be OK.
But, even though you can't tell from my picture, I guess I'm getting more conservative in my old age. My car is pretty darn new still, and it's still under warranty, and frankly I just don't feel like getting into this kind of fight (much less dealing with smog inspections), so I'm leaving mine pretty much stock for now.
