Will Mazda address RX-7 shortcomings?

My best friend owns a 1993 RX-7 sport model and although it's a great performer, I can't tell you how many times interior bits and pieces have fallen or broken off. The car seems "too light", in that the materials seem ultra-cheap, and not on par with cars of the same price range. Did Mazda cut corners to keep the car light or to keep costs down? I, for one, hope that the interior will stand the test of time--it's hard to tell from the recent pictures. I curently own a 2002 Audi A4 and the interior is rock-solid. All of the switchgear has a tight, firm feel to it--nothing "tinny" or loose. Any thoughts on whether this new RX will age with more grace?

The interior of the Rx-8 is supposed to be one of the best they've ever built. Some of the regulars here can attest to the quality of the Millenia interior.

I will bet approx $28,000 that the Rx-8 interior will last.

I also remember reading magazine and owner complaints regarding poor build quality, paint issues with the last gen RX-7. Let's hope that has been laid to rest..

The paint problems were only with '93s, and were fixed in '94. The paint on my '94 is in great shape.

Mazda better address those issues or the 8 will sell like the FD (bad).

I just wanted to say you have a great looking car!

It's simply beautiful (drool) it's a hatch and it's in black, my favorite color + has the front spoiler and rear wing and those wonderful pop-up headlights

... If only I didn't require a back seat and a larger trunk

I'd be shoping around for a 94 or a 95 back in 2000 ... let the wife and kids stay at home ...

Edit: I forgot to add that I also love the doorhandles and the rear lights!

I would like to second the opinion that you have a beautiful car. If I could *find* one around here, I'd be driving it. But no one, and I mean NO ONE, wants to give them up.

The interiors were improved from 94 on too.

The interiors of the '93s were crappy. Also, there were reported problems with the cars stalling at traffic lights and so forth. Yes the paint had a problem with chipping and the doors were hard to close. Those seemed like issues that American car makers have, not the Japanese. I'm quite sure Mazda learned from the FS to never bring a car to market hastily. Maybe that's one reason why the 8 is taking such a long time.

A shame, really, as the 1st gen started as a project in 1976 and was realized in metal in 1978 as a '79 model.

If you're into the older RX-7s (1st and 2nd gen) swing by my site at http://www.rotorhead.ca

I don't expect any problems with the interior. Look at the yellow pre production model of last year as compared to the current ones driving around as test mules. The interior really hasn't changed much.

Well, the interior was improved in that it no longer had peeling paint on everything, but it still didn't have that "solid Audi feel". I think the interior in the RX-8 will at least be very close to if not equal that, as the interior contains real metal and high-quality polymers and looks quite nice in the pictures we've seen so far.

Also, thanks for the compliments everybody! :D

The Rx-8 interior looks very similar to the Mazda6 (Attenza) which is very European I waould say it wouldn't be as flimsy as the FD.

Also the FD was designed to be extremely lightweight eg. usiing very light shitty plastic for interior bit eg. Its great when its new but after a few years it becomes brittle and breaks.

Still at least it insn't hard or expensive to find replacment bits.

The RX-8 but I still won't sell my FD's
