Windhsield cracked!!!

Well, it was bound to happen I guess. I was driving on the freeway when a rock jumped up and hit my windshield. After sitting in the sun all day, the crack is now proably 20 inches long...

Anyone had to replace a windshield yet? How much for an OEM windshield?

I'll post pics when I get home tonight.

Make sure to check with your insurance. Many of them will replace windshields for free (depends on the laws in your state). I believe it falls under their "safety item" category.

call your insurance company.

i know when a rock chipped mine they came out and fixed it for free. you may have to pay your deductible, but at least they will help you out.

sowwy to hear!

I put a call into my Insurance Agent this morning to see if I have that additional coverage for the windshield. I know I had it with my last company but I switched carriers this year and I'm not sure if I remembered to add it again..... *crosses fingers*

Hopefully I won't have to pay a deductible because I'm sure I can get a new windshield for less then my $500 deductible. Well, now I wait for the insurance company to call me back...

rock chip is free, but if window needs to be replace your deductiable will cover it. but if your dedecut is 500 , then i would not file it. Because you can get a window way cheaper then 500.

btw this is for statefarm in texas. i dont know what your area ins laws are. gl to yah

I just did mine last week, $400. Ins was not an option due to my $500 Deductible. Go through the phonebook and call a couple places, prices do vary.

Many insurance companies have a reduced glass deductable. Mine was $100 versus my normal $500 on accidents. I had mine replaced through insurance by Safelite auto glass, they came to my home for the install. You can request OEM glass when they call you to schedule. Mine was done with aftermarket (PPG, Pittsburg Plate Glass) that is very high quality and matches the OEM design with the sunshield etc.

Here in MA we are fully covered, as a 'safety item.' I don't remember CA statutes. Hopefully you at least have the reduced glass rate cited.

Make sure you go with OEM approved replacement. There are a lot of cheap 3rd party replacements out there, generally the first choice of insurance companies due to lower cost to them, with poor bezels and the result is improper seating/adhesion and subsequent wind noise. Insist on an OEM approved.

Hey Jedi....I had to get mine replaced last year (I just moved from LA to Connecticut about a month ago)

Let me find the name of the company I used...If I remember correctly, it only ended up costing me like $350 for the replacement. After work today I'll try to get the name of the place I used

As others have said, this is usually replaced under comprehensive.

If the damage is repairable (20 inches doesn't sound repairable) most insurance companies will waive the deductable if you accept repair rather than replacement.

Yeah, I'm pretty bummed out about it. I guess I should be thankful that it cracked the windshield and not the front bumper

Yeah, I'll try and have them come out to my office and replace it while I'm here. SB meet on 9/9? Hmm, might have to look into that, it has been a while since I've gone.

and most chip repair places are mobile so they come to you (home/work/etc) which is super convenient! it took about 15 minutes for him to complete my chip repair.

I had a chip that turned into a big crack. Get it fixed asap if you get a ding in the windshield--it only took over night to happen.

I made the mistake of asking my insurance company if I was covered for glass. I should have just made sure I was covered before mentioning that it was broken. Those are funky windshields, so they're bound to be expensive...

If you call one of the larger glass repair places ,,most of them will have your insurance waive the deductable on windshield replacement. And you can get that free box of steaks.
Just had mine changed about three weeks ago (windshield). Fell under the Comprehensive Section of my policy,, zero deductable. If you dont have zero deductable on glass it is a good idea to get it. Only costs a couple of dollars more a month. Worth it ? ,YES.
It also covers all the lights on the car and the mirrors. YES ALL.
I have had headlights replaced (not on the 8) on other cars I owned.

you might be able to look into this for future protection, depending on the cost of the installation + material.

http://www.clearplex.com/

I think someone said the material is made by Madico, I'm still trying to find more informations about this. I don't know if it works, how much to install, or if they have installer in LA/OC area.
