Traction control was worth absolutey **** too. however, after proper winter tires, it controlled exceptionally and I was able to drive around people getting stranded in a foot of snow.
I too come from a history of rear wheel drive cars and have never had a trouble with driving in the snow. But i was in for a rude awakening when I tried last winter with a dusting of snow...it's not pretty. You could be Mario Andretti and not be able to drive this car with the stock rubber in snow. Period.
Sorry.

Well, first snowfall here in Michigan, and while accumulation is not much, winds and sleet formed some nasty slush here on the roads. It's my first experience with a set of Hankooks I put on a few weeks ago and the news is...no news. Car drives like normal, with slight fishtailing under heavy acceleration. No news is good news here.

1. Open front door of house.
2. Drive RX-8 into living room.
3. Watch calendar carefully.
4. In May, reverse procedure.

I did ok today.
I have the stock tires on my 2004 8 - just 3K miles.
We had about 2 - 3 inches of snow - that had recently been plowed - so still slushy. Probably no more than .25 inches - but still slushy and wet.
I had no problems whatsoever. Car handled well - absolutely no worse than a rainy day.
I am in no way suggesting that anyone should drive on stock tires in snow - I got surprised today at work with the snow storm - and drove about 30 miles in the stuff -
This site scared me to death about the stock tires (although I have felt confident driving a number of rear-wheel drive cars)...
my Blizzaks / New rims are coming next Tuesday.
