Wow, sad but true, this is why the RX-8's resale is so bad (cash for clunker)

also... once the $1 billion allocated by the federal gov't is used up, then that's it. tho, manufacturers can still offer their own incentives- separate and apart from the program. chrysler, for example, is doubling-up the fed's program by matching with a cash-back rebate. tho, i dunno any car they offer is all that appealing...

.... who buys an 8 for fuel economy. The person that started this thread is "sadly, but true" a tool. Sell your car and leave the world of rotary, we dont want you. I hope this whole thing does drive people away that way it leaves us rotary nuts even more noticed.

I think the 8's mileage is a benefit, driving away the unwashed.
I really enjoy filling Zoomy when the guy at the next pump is filling his Prius. Same feeling I get eating a steak and I see some slob eating a bowl of tofu.

I'm sure he thought it was going to be a up to 4500$ on top your current trade in value. Like most people out there thought. If that was the case I would have traded mine in the same day that commecial came out.

There are plenty of examples of people downgrading from rx8. miata, bmw, gto, mazda2, mazda3. They are usually foolish enough to tell the world they are downgrading, rather than keeping the sad story to themselves as they should.
Never, never seen an upgrade. Not possible in real world circumstances.
The same people selling rx8 are probably the same people buying high and selling low in markets, real estate, craigslist, and ebay. Just habitually shooting themselves over and over.

yea no point using the 8 for cash for clunkers, the gov't would only give u at most $4500 for your car, and u don't get anything on top of that. plus, according to the rules, they're going to pretty much completely destroy your car. it's only worth it for people that are having engine problems who are past 100,000 miles and don't want to pay the money to repair their rotary.
as for my family, we're trading in a 2000 bmw 540i (the steptronic transmission apparently only gets 16 mpg) for a new 335d (27 mpg). it's nice cuz the bmw ran over some tire debris which costs $5k to fix, and instead we're getting $4500 from the gov't for a new bmw and bmw is adding $4500 on top of that to buy their 335d. $9k off a brand new bimmer, not too shabby. of course, i don't know if my family is the type of family the gov't wants to aid or that bmw is a car company they want to help either. but hey, might as well take advantage.

Actually, one friend of mine has a Supra he's working on doing a SUPER build on it and we were laughing because we were saying that by the time he finished his Supra there would be flying hover craft cars...like the Jetson's. I told him not to worry because I would still have the 8 and we will be the only ones with wheels!

You don't see them bailing out pawn shops and payday loan places. Or helping people who can only afford a sub-$4500 clunker. Expect the prices on the remaining old heaps to go up after they scoop a billion dollars worth of them off the road. Remember the outcome when California did something like this a few years back?

I hardly consider any rx8 a clunker, unless it's been in a wreck but still runs. An 04 is worth more than twice the Govment cluncker trade-in value. Sportscars like the rx8 and rx7 keep their visual appeal and desire long after family sedans are in the junkyard. Lot's of sports cars would qualify if they were wrecks not worth fixing. Even then they can be parted out for more than $4500. One would be foolish to look at the rx8 as Goverment trade-in for a compact now. At least not for another 5-6 years. It's not that kind of car. The financial loss would be rediculous.

Interesting that they've based this on mileage, but the media is also talking about air quality...even though emissions are based on per mile. Air quality must be part of the press kit.
This is just the start. Voluntary trade-in now, with a financial incentive, but eventually they'll ban any car below some mileage. They've already required that cars be registered, which any NRA member will tell you is the first step toward confiscation.

From Mazda:
http://www.mazdausamedia.com/content...kers-program-0
"Fifty-seven percent of the Mazdas sold under the program have been MAZDA3s, the company's most fuel-efficient vehicle."
But don't let the feds tell us what to do - Buy a Hummer!

Can you cut a Hummer in half and get two $4500 clunker bounties on it?
Numbers on this program are interesting. One billion dollars divided by $4500 comes out to 222,222 cars. Not sure how many new cars are sold in the US each year, but that's got to be a significant chunk. They're talking of adding another two billion, which would raise it to 666,666 (hmmm...double 666's). Also reduces the supply of used cars by that many.
I wonder if this will boost the auto industry more than the loans made to the manufacturers. It will come out of the pockets of all of us (both right wing whiners and left wing hippies), but so did the loans.
