Wrecked my RX8 today!
I was on my way to college this morning when I hit some black ice on the interstate while crossing a small bridge. I lost control and almost hit a SUV in the right lane. I corrected it and then fishtailed again, shot off into the median and hit a guard rail on the southbound side. It's not totaled, but the guy at the body shop says it has about $5,000-$6,000 worth of damage. If I would have had the winter tires this might not have happened. I'm just thankful I hit the guardrail instead of oncoming traffic in the southbound lane. I know now how important the winter tires are when you live in a cold climate.

I just keep hearing more and more stories like this. My friend has an Evo and lives in Maryland. It was about 40º and dry and he was on an off ramp going a very moderate speed. His wheels unhooked and he went spinning around in circles. I know these are sports cars and maybe people should know, but so many people think they're fine with whatever the dealer gives them. Even the people who know better than to drive around in snow in ultra performance summer tires don't always know that these tires are like rocks when it's cold and can cause you to spin out without a lot of warning for what may seem like normal driving.
Glad to hear you're ok. Hopefully insurance will cover everything and you can go get some good all-seasons or maybe even winter tires depending on where you live.

yea when it's cold out the tires turn into hockey pucks. I only take my car out on clear days for it's bi-weekly drives (semi-storing for the winter) but you still have to be super careful! The winter tires are much softer so they don't loose all traction in the cold..
But regardless if it was blackice the initial loss of control would still of happened with snows on, but the after effect could have been averted (the back end flying out once you saved from the initial slip). Glad your ok!

If you hit ice, you hit ice. No tires would have helped you. Even if its cold out and you are on the stock tires, you just need to give them time to warm up a bit. Just dont drive if there is snow/slush on the ground. Did you car have stabilty control or anything? Also, how are you doing..I assume OK since you are posting here, but I am curious to see how well the car protected you (airbags?). You have insurance, so the best part is that you are in one piece. I drive my my car once maybe twice a week up here in New England if there is no snow on the ground and my car holds well as long as I give the tires time to warm up a bit.

Sorry for your loss man, I feel your pain. I went through a wreck myself last weekend.
Look on the bright side, it could always have been worse, at least you walked away with no major injuries. Insurance will most likely cover it and your baby will be made whole again (if it's not totaled). Did the air bags go off? Some ins. companies say that it's a total if the bags go off.

It isn't totaled, but the bad thing is that I had a bad wreck this past summer in a 2004 Mustang. I had a different insurance company then, but there is still the possibility I will get canceled. I sure hope I don't. The airbags did not deploy, I hit the guardrail going about 10-15mph so the impact wasn't that bad. It still shattered the front bumper, front driver side fender, the left headlight, and killed the radiator. I didn't get hurt at all. I barely felt the impact. There isn't any snow on the ground, it was just below freezing and foggy. To top it off, a salt truck came by and salted the bridge ten minutes after I wrecked.

I don't think winter tires would have helped too much unless they had spikes. (illegal in most us states) I grew up in N. GA, and now live in Central TX. I lost a car to ice in my younger days in GA. Their really is not much you can do if your sliding on it, but hope. One thing I learned after my wreck was to keep the wheels pointed where you would want to go if you were not sliding on ice. What got me was when the tires hooked up at the edge of the ice it snap-hooked me into a pole.
