W'sup with Toyota and Mitsubishi
Listen fellas:
Okay, the Z is back after a 6 year absence, the rotary is making it's return (we all know that), but to be honest, I really did like the '93-'98 Supra. In person, the car was absolutely stunning. The Mitsu. 3000 I didn't care one bit about because IMO it was a stupid gimmicky car with a dreadful design. I am curious to see if Toyota will offer a Supra replacement because really there is nothing Toyota offers that interests me since the Supra left. If Mitsu. came back with a 3000 replacement, I might like it, if it's a good design/chassis/powertrain package. I hoped they learned to stay away from the Flash Gordon features. (Remember the selectable exhaust note and active aerodynamics?) Anyway I hope to see the day again when you have pockets rockets and Japanese sports GT's gracing our American pot-hole filled streets instead of all these insane SUV's. Anyway, do you think Toyota is watching Mazda and Nissan?

I did like the styling of the Supra, but while I considered the Z car to be too heavy, the Supra was a Z to the 'x' power. If it comes with a V8, it may be fast, but if it is the past Supra design with a V8, it will be even worse. However, if they go something along the lines of the NSX or another lightweight, small V8, then maybe it will be okay.
I'm not a big Toyota fan at all, but I did like the Supra, I just would never buy one for myself.

I don't think this thread was a request though?
I've allready predicted all the car manufacturers will try to be in the 2005 Car & Driver shootout again. Although it will probably be 2003/2004. I beleive it will have the 350Z, Supra, Corvette and a new supercharged RX-7 or at least a Mazdaspeed turbo RX-8.

yea i heard that the supra was supposed to be coming back, with a convertible option, or maybe that was jut a concept. However i haven't heard anything about mitsubishi coming with anything though...
i would like myself an rx8, or maybe even a new model rx7.

Johnny-come-lately marketing dept's fighting with corp finance, most assured. Check out the back cover of the latest October SuperStreet, with Honduh's rendition of the FnF promo poster. LMAO!

Well, Mitsu had been showing around their RPM7000 concept car that was their "new direction" for sports cars. If you've never seen it, it was a half-sports car, half-SUV thing, and 100% hideous (in my humble opinion). But that idea got dropped, probably because no one gave it a second look on the way to the other exhibits at the Auto Show.
I don't think they have any other high-end sports cars in the works, haven't heard any rumours to that effect. I think they are concentrating their efforts on the EVO series of cars now.

"Supra was just fast... handling wasn't the key point on this car."
How can you possibly say this with a skidpad of over 9.1, I believe. The Supra handles as good as a vette, and was actually designed as a GT car. Hence why we see them in GT class races all of the time . Sure, once you do some mods to the engine and get uber/insane amounts of horsepower handling becomes moot, but then again, do some handling mods at the same time, and you have the original concept, only better. I drive a VR-4, which IMO handles a little better after stiffening the chasis, but the Supra is no slouch, and has bigger aftermarket support by far. Just don't say handling wasn't the key point on this car.

I would say that handing was not "the key" point of the Supra. Especially if your VR-4 handles better than the Supra...

First off....I dunno...but heres what I feel will happen...the new Z had more power then i ever thought it would, and i said it right here on this forum....woops. But what i really think will happen is that we will get another supra...just will follow all the i guess you could say "real" sports cars are doing....more displacement
(the reason i say real is sports car is defined as a 2 seater 2 door car, typically RWD i.e. Supra/RX7, yeah yeah yeah i know the RX8 is a functional sports car but you know)
I think that the Supra is going to AT LEAST come with a 3.5 liter V8 a VVTi 2JZGTE would be nice though

agreed, a high revvin' and boosted straigh 6 is (IMHO) superior to a V8 in every way, other than reliability (i guess), and price (i know... )
too bad Toyota wouldn't just buy the Nissan RB26DETT for the Supra...

hmm... that does seem like a very big possibility, after all, Toyota's latest sports sedan offering (IS300) was under the Lexus badge, even though it's just a regular Toyota in Japan (Altezza)...

you dislike the design of the car?? aestetically or functionally (and by function i mean SPEED... :D)?? i thought C+D and R+T compared it favourably to (it's obvious target) the BMW 3, at least for a first go...

does anyone remember the rumors of the supra replacement going by the name of 2000gt or 4000gt? I cant remember which it was. i also remember hearing about a possible Supra based on the Celica. I remember seeing a horrible rendition of a Celica on steriods being called a supra replacement, ironically i think the new Ferrari Enzo looks like that pic.

Not sure if the NA version of that engine has the same internals as the TT version.

One other thing that differentiated the Toyota Celica Supra from the regular celica was an independent rear suspension.
Not to nitpick (these are some of my favourite cars from the 80's) but the Celica Supra had a completely different engine from the regular Celica. The regular celica had a 2.4L inline-4, whereas the Supra version had a 2.8L inline-6.
The Celica Supra featured a different interior and exterior than the regular Celica (but you could still tell its roots.)
A friend of mine moved into a new house recently with a garage. Lo and behold under a bunch of boxes and a sheet was a 1985 Celica Supra 5-speed, in good shape! Who forgets a car when they move? Its been a year and no one has claimed it yet!
