y'all know the 8 drinks the oil.

I bought my car about 2 months ago, and probably filled up gas tank twice... (I go to school, I dont drive it unless I am home)

I turned the engine off, wait for 10 min. and get a dipstick.
And like oil is still at the full mark, I check over and over but its still there at same spot. It does not seem to decrease. I know you guys recommed to check dipstick every 2 times I fill up the tank or certain miles. I am over both of that, but my oil seems the same.

What the hell is going on?
I have spare oil in my trunk, but never used it yet.

The 8 doesn't "drink" oil, it sips it. You may not see a huge difference in oil level after two fill ups. It's still important to check every two/three fillups, but it's not going to be a drastic change. Nothing is wrong with your car. Mine is the same way.

If you don't notice a change after 5 or 6 fillups, I might be a little worried. Then again, if you aren't using any oil even after 5 or 6 fillups, you probably don't have a motor left! The metering pump in the 8 can go bad. (I found out the hard way! )

Ok, first off, you do realize the 8's engine is DESIGNED to inject a small amount of oil into the engine for the rotors. Saying "ya'll know the 8 drinks the oil" makes it sound like a) there's a design flaw causing excessive oil consumption, and b) the 8 uses a lot of oil. It doesn't—you might add a quart over 1,000 miles or so.

And though it's wise to check the oil every other fill-up, you'll find the oil level goes down VERY slowly, and you'll be adding oil very infrequently. In 8,500 miles I've added small amounts of oil maybe three times.

check every 1500 mile or so, every 8 is a little bit different in terms of oil consumption rate.

As it's been stated, the 8 injects a teeny tiny squirt a couple times every so often. Two things affect the consumption; Flash version and driver habits. The latest flash is said to use a little less oil to prolong plug life. The more revs per mile the more it burns per mile.

Generally I get about 2000 miles per quart, but most of my driving is highway. Some people get 1000 miles per quart.

I just had the latest flash put in and will be changing the oil today so I'll be watching consumption to see if there are any changes.

The CX7 gets about 2500 miles to a quart and the 5 doesn't seem to use any oil between the 3000 mile changes.

To the contrary - Mazda increased the amount of oil injected, to provide more lubrication and better protection to the engine.

Yes that would be more accurate.

Checking every other fillup is a bit much. I do it about once a month and never had a problem.

Thanks guys, I am just relieved that I am not in trouble...!
I will keep my eyes on it.
But it just seems it doesnt go down.
I will keep checking.

when you guys check the dipstick and you can see clearly it went down? before you need to add some more?

I check mine every 500 miles, but at 10,000 miles i've only added about 4 quarts total (I get the oil changed every 5000 per mazda's recommendation). Once I see how the new flash changes consumption I'll probably switch to checking it every 1000.

I usually add some once it gets below the "half" mark on the dipstick.

How many miles do you have on your car so far?

Last time I heard...even for the piston engined guys...1Qt./3000miles is acceptable usage for any engine.

As always, every engine is different and your usage may vary.

If you want to see the oil go down, just so as you know your engine is working correctly , spend some quality time in the 5-9K rpm range, favoring the ups and downs and spending more time in the higher up ranges. I mean not just running thru the gears, but relax and get used to running the car there. You can do it on the street, but it's more fun on the track, but either will work, you'll just be more obvious on the street runing in 2nd and 3rd. It's a lot of fun and really doesn't hurt anything, except your gas mileage .

If you do this, you could use as much as 1/2 to 1 qt every 30-40 miles. That lil metering pump will get a good workout that way!

It has over a lil 11k.... when I bought it
I am not sure how much I put on... not a lot at all.
I don think that helps anything, does it?

*makes mental note to pack lots of oil* It appears i will have an RX8 again soon and will be running in this rev range a lot on a few mountain excursions. Must remember to take a few extra quarts of oil.

Each car's a little different, and everyone's driving habits are different. Once you figure out how much oil you use, it's easy to determine an interval. For instance, I have to add a 1/4-1/2 qt every 1500-2000 miles. Your mileage may vary .

I average a quart every 750 miles. Best was a little over 1000 and worst was a little over 500.

My car gulps oil.
