Yes! an Rx8 is finally in my garage!
Hello everyone!
I have finally got one, a brand new 2006, MT sunlight silver GT rx-8, with the black and chaparral interior. I got a great deal (From the Autobarn Evanston, Illinois) and I am just loving, but i have a few questions.
After I park it into my garage, and come out maybe 30 min. after, I smell a faint burning smell that just sits in my garage. None of the other cars in my family make the garage smell, but there is defenitly a smell (This could be one of the most stupid question)
Also, I am very new at driving stick. Am i doing heavy damage to the clutch if i am gassing it a little too much when starting, and slowly release the clutch. I get nervous, and I am still afraid of stalling the car, so I just give it gas, and the RPMS rev to about 2-2.5k, and then i release the clutch slowly. I am trying to just make it natural, and get good take-offs, but I just need more practice.
Thanks a lot for all of the information you guys provided me before I purchased this car. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have made my mind up on the car, and that beautiful car wouldn't be in my life.
PS: Does anyone have a nice car cover that they use from either mazda or another company. I looked on a website, and mazda wants like $250 for a cover, but I was looking in the $100-150 range. Thanks!

Burn smell...if its a new 8 than the burn smell will go away in a while...has to do with some "plastic" on the exhaust system...or something along those lines =P...
congrats on the purchase ...just watch the curse of the silver

no, your not hurting you clutch, everyone add too much gas when you learn.
Here is a forum devoted towards manual clutches.

Congrats. Post some pics on here and the Calling all Silvers in the Pic forum. Make sure to take a pic of your interior. Very few black/chaparral interior photos anywhere.
What was your final pricing?

Thanks for all of the replies!
I did not even know the black/chaparral interior existed until I went to the dealer. it was very unique, and the chaparral was a lot darker than I expected which made me like it even more. The final, OTD price with tax/title/everything else came to 25,750. It was brand spankin new, along with the rotary/appearence package. Ill try to get pics up ASAP!

Staver, the smell could be normal, it could also be that you're burning your clutch a little, lots of gas and slow clutch release = smelly smelly burnt clutch.
Go to a parking lot, practice getting the car moving without even touching the gas, it's possible, the secret is in your left foot and the "Friction zone" of your clutch pedal. The reason people stall is they usually just let off the clutch, no no no, take your time, go fast until the friction zone, then ease it off and you'll be just fine.

Walmart has microfiber covers that work well for good weather - medium sized work fine. Less than $75 These are for inside garage and moist mornings. You might want something more padded if you are in a hail prone areas or facing winds and snow - then the more expensive ones are worth it. The cheap microfibers are washable so you keep the grit out of them and if you toss in a little borax it keeps fungus and tree gunk down.

I just got my digital camera, and was fooling around with it tonight. The outside pics turned out crappy because of no light, but here is just a little peek at the interior.
I know, I know, clear corners are on the way.

Congrats, I to just pick up a 06 MT Shinka, the Galaxy Gray. I have about 550 mile and I still smell the oilly smell. I paid $28.5 with Appear. and Aero pak. I thought I got a good deal. The 6 speed in the 8 has a very smooth gear box. You will get used to it pretty quick. How do you plan driving it for the first 1000 miles ? I have been gentle easing up the RPM with each 100( after the oil has reached normal operating temp). Can't wait for break in to over.
How do you like flat key thingy?
Anyway welcome

I Love everything. I am still rusty on stick, but getting the hang of things. I have been pretty gentle, been over 5k rpms a handful of times. I am getting my first oil change soon, I have 1k miles on the car. Enjoy it, and have fun! I just love all of the attention I get at lights.

Nice. I, too, had the "smell." It went away after about 1K mi. As for the clutch...it should be okay if it's brand new. You'll learn quickly enough.
Congrats.
P.S.
Did you get the Navi?

Hey Staver and Gray 06.
I bought a Copper Red Shinka in July. a few tips. First of all, check your oil regularly, about ever other fill up, and read your manual......hehehe anything you need to know mechanically is there.....There is no need for an oil change at 1000 miles, but my dealer mechanic told me on the side.....every 3K religiously.....Once you get the hang of the stick, enjoy it, and then get out there and DRIVE it like you STOLE it. SERIOUSLY. These engines are designed for racing, Forget what you know about piston engines, he said....If you dont drive it HARD, she will give you problems....they are designed for rough handling...I am a woman obviously and I'll tell ya, I drive my baby like no other car I've owned, and I've had supra's, bmw's and Even a new model mustang, and there is no comparison. The mechanic told me, the biggest problem they have with these cars is that their owners DONT drive them hard enough. Get out and ENJOY it.......after the 600 mile break in of course...hehehe.guys....It took me a week to break mine in....and that was running around town...just for the heck of it.....I red line mine at least once a week to blow her out....from 1st through 5th gear....and 6th i use for crusin mostly but i'll hit 100 -120 mph on an empty interstate at 3 am, jsut to keep her in shape. I've had her coming up on 5 months and have almost 9K miles on her with absolutely NO problems....Enjoy the attention guys....you are drving a very classy car. OH and BTW.....hehehe the credit card key does its job....NEVER leave home without it, because once you shut her down, she's dead as a doornail.....learned that one from experience....lolol

Thanks for the info! I have friends with Evo's/Sti's/S2ks, and I wouldn't trade this car for any of them. Though it is hard to keep up with them, the style of the car is just amazing. Around here (Chicago), there are not a lot of rx-8's. I see 350z's like civics, and an Evo/Sti every trip. This car is my baby

Staver I traded my stang in on my 8, after 18 months. What it had in muscle and torque, she makes up in comfort and class hands down, and believe me..the new stangs are not built FORD TOUGH........If I can cause a rear end to go out, and Im just not that hard on vehicles. I drive this one the way she was designed to be driven, thats all. I woud have expected a 300 hp 280 ft lbs torque motor and tranny to be able to handle lil old me...NOT.hehehe
