Are you turning your engine off correctly!?!? I'm sure 95% of you are not!

Seriously, can someone explain how to do this to me!? I never picked up on how to turn it that way.

The dealer as well as Mazda recommend doing this every time you turn you engine off to keep it well lubed. Why? Since the rotary engine it so compact, the passages are much smaller and harder for the oil to get "up in there". It makes a difference.

This is also a preventative measure when your engine has not been run long enough to reach proper operating temps.
Its all there in your manual... if this is news to you, you obviously need to go read it.

edit- dmp ypu may be talkign abotu different versions of the manual. our early manual were supposed to be updated. the 2005 manuals have slightly different wording. the new wording is covered in one of the flooding/hard start TSBs

When I bought my 2004 8, which was just about a year ago now, I was told two different things about shutting it down so that I wouldn't flood it. The salesman (Tony Rotz at Tumenia Mazda in Olathe, KS) told me to run it up to 6k for 10 seconds, let it down to idle and turn it off. That almost made me walk on the deal right there as I had no intention of embarassing myself every time I got out of my car by revving the engine like a ricer.
Later that day, as I was closing the deal, the finance guy told me that I should run it up to 3k or so and turn turn the key off while the engine was revving. This was supposedly for the same reason as others have said in this thread. That it would cause any excess fuel to flush from the chambers and stop flooding. That sounded like something I could live with and I've done it every time I've shut my car off since. Warm, cold, long drive or just pulling from the garage to the driveway. I've never flooded and I've never had a hard start.
So, it might not be neccesary, but it doesn't seem to be hurting and I'm gonna keep doing it.

I'll snap his neck.
I was told that you should only shut the engine down cold. If it is warm you let it run until it runs out of gas. This engine doesn't like to rev. It performs best if you let it run for long periods at idle. That said, it is good to sometimes sit with it parked and keep redlining it until smoke comes from under the hood and out the tailpipes. You won't have any more problems with flooding after that.

Oh definitely- because we should ALL be getting 29mpg when we drive.
I've obviously screwed up. 50k miles, only revved the engine to turn it off when it's not warmed up. My car must be about to die.

My 05 came with a DVD. It explained start up/turn off procedures (same as manual).
I never listen to dealers because mine recommended that I put the most exspensive synthetic oil they offer in my car when my manual explains not to use synthetic. Please don't start about oil! My point is dealers are one of the lowest forms of life on the planet.

5 pages later I still say the main benefit is to let the wife know you're home.
Allows tradesmen to leave via the back window before you walk in the door.
