Are you turning your engine off correctly!?!? I'm sure 95% of you are not!

I only rev for 10 sec. @ 3000 rpm then return to idle for warm-up before shut-off procedure per Mazda RX-8 Product Update Video and updated RX-8 owner's manual.
After normal drives (over 5 mi. at above 50 deg. F) I shut Renisis off normal or blip to 3k and return to idle before shut-off.
11 months and counting... no flooding.

I rev to 3k and cut ignition every time. If cold, I vary the revs between 2 and 4k until the engine warms up, then hold at 3k and cut ignition. Never had a flood on any flash; started with M in 2004.
Waste of fuel? Eh, the blip to take the engine from idle up to 3k isn't much.
RG is right (of course), that this is to spin any excess fuel out of the combustion chambers. It has nothing to do with oiling. I think its worthwhile to do all the time, but now with the uprated starter and battery, its not completely necessary. Besides, it makes a cool Jetsons-noise when it spins down and everyone in the parking lot will look at you.

One thing about this always baffled me: If the cold shutdown procedure was so important to minimize flooding, why didn't Mazda just program it into the engine's computer? After all, the conputer knows if the engine is warmed up or not, knows the outside temperature, and probably knows the miles driven. Under the right circumstances, when you turned the key off, the computer would rev the engine and shut down the injectors.

I don't think Mazda wants the rsponsibility for the nose of the car on that side of the garage wall.
In my case, this would put the radiator in bed.

"yawn", umm, I turn the key to off and leave. No problems, ever. Guess I'm lucky or this whole flooding thing is way over-blown compared to how often it actually occurs since new battery, starter and plugs went into the rx8.

That almost made me walk on the deal right there as I had no intention of embarassing myself every time I got out of my car by revving the engine like a ricer.
Later that day, as I was closing the deal, the finance guy told me that I should run it up to 3k or so and turn turn the key off while the engine was revving. This was supposedly for the same reason as others have said in this thread. That it would cause any excess fuel to flush from the chambers and stop flooding. That sounded like something I could live with and I've done it every time I've shut my car off since. Warm, cold, long drive or just pulling from the garage to the driveway. I've never flooded and I've never had a hard start.
So, it might not be neccesary, but it doesn't seem to be hurting and I'm gonna keep doing it.

My problem is how powerful the newest starter is..... If I even so much as think about turning the key, the car just vrooms to life. Literally, tho, I turn the key for maybe a half a second before the car cranks......
.........so I ain't worried about the flooding issues..............

The dealer as well as Mazda recommend doing this every time you turn you engine off to keep it well lubed. Why? Since the rotary engine it so compact, the passages are much smaller and harder for the oil to get "up in there". It makes a difference.

I know that the two or three other people that I have seen do this procedure do it incorrectly, so that may be the case with others that have tried it and still ended up flooded.
Despite what the manual or other materials might say, you need to kill the motor before the revs reach idle. That is to say, while it is still winding down from 3k or so and passing 1500 RPM or above.
If you wait for it to hit idle again, the PCM starts shooting a ton of fuel to smooth the idle out and maintain the cold-start enrichment. The anti-buck routine is still running when it is winding down and the injectors are cut, so this is when you want to kill the EFI.

It's a damn shame that the car has been out for a few years and we are talking about how to turn it off. If I was an outsider looking at this thread, I would think that we were all FOOLS OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER. They would prolly be crackin wise on our momma's.
FYI, I NEVER TURN MY CAR OFF, that's the best way to do it, never had a flood and my starter is still good. So suck on that beyatches.
