We've been discussing this in the West Forum as well. A few of us are going.

I'm also going to the GM Auto Show In Motion. I want to drive a Vette and a Hummer.

I know, GM is not ZoomZoom, but I still want to race a Vette against the clock.

its not as cool as you think it is going to be. the vette and hummer are "premium" cars...meaning you can't drive those until you drive some other car first for the vette, and a truck before you can drive the hummer.

i didn't bother with the hummers/trucks because i really don't care about them.

and for the car test drive, there is a 35mph speed limit and no crazy stuff allowed, like drifting. they can kick you out for violating these. they can also kick out anyone that's there with you.

i drove the gto. it has a nice exhaust note, and is kinda comfy, but it is a fat, bloated pig, and drives like it too. also, the one i drove was yellow, and if you don't know about the gto, the instrument cluster is the same color as the car's exterior...yellow speedo, white numbering. bad combo. anyways. the "track" that you get to drive around takes all of 20-30 seconds to complete.

after that we went and got in line for the vette. line moved much quicker. you could also choose the cadi cts-v instead of the vette if you wanted. hop in, there is an "instructor" sitting next to you. no speedlimit, but no drifting. so you pull up to the start line, gun it, shift to 2nd (in the MT), then you come up to a sweeping left turn, then a box corner, then you are done. 20 seconds tops. no one timing you.

now, i'm not saying you shouldn't go. its free. you get to drive all the "normal" vehicles you want, but you can only drive the premium sports once (vette or cts-v) and you can only drive the hummer once. also, there is free lunch. sandwich, drink, chips, apple, cookie. and when you leave, provided you didn't get kicked out, you get a bag with a shirt and a few other marketing type things.

In Chicago, we are going to have a drift competition. Whoever gets the longest leture afterwards (from the people running the event) wins the competition. :D

I guess with this hot summer we've been having, I didn't think much about the date of our event... it could be anywhere from 20F to 70F at the end of October in Chicago... could make for some interesting summer tire drifting

I'm surprised they put ours so late in the year...

Damn...nowhere near me at all.

I have done the GM event and also the Daimler-Chrysler events in the past. The jeep was fun to test as you actually drove it on a 4x4 course complete with ruts, rocks, tree trunk bridge and big hills.

The last GM one I went to wasn't so fun. 35mph limit was there and you couldn't jam on the brakes or anything. Was disappointing. They did let you get a little crazier with the Crossfire...it is a fun little car, but I like the Miata better.

I would LOVE to do a snow autocross... I've screwed around up on lake geneva when it freezes over and have had the best time ice drifting. The rednecks in their pickups didn't seem to amused though : )

If you think that sucks.. try living 3 minutes away from it and turning 18 in less than 2 weeks from when the event takes place! Why did they have to start in SF?!

The local BMW club does 2 ice autocrosses each year :D . Not sure which lake they use. They didn't do it last year though because the weather didn't cooperate.
