There's also the possibility that the Elantra was going 140mph. Trying to pass someone going that fast is going to be hard. I mean, who doesn't pimp out their Elantra to run 9's?

I used to drive an '84 Rx-7 with 140 ponies. That car would rip up the Appalachians like there was no tomorrow, passing winnebagos, cadillacs, benzes, whatever. And that was 140 ponies. Hell, even my miata, with it's truly pathetic claimed 128 horses didn't behave like that.

So, as I see it, there are 3 options to your story:

1. You're not getting all the power you should. Have your car checked out, pull a compression test.

2. Even tho you claim you 'downshifted' you were STILL in too high a gear. What were your speed and RPM when you attempted to pass? You just can't drive this like a V-8, man. If you're at 2500 rpm and try to pass it ain't gonna happen quickly. If you're at 4000+ you're gonna fly. Up hill, down hill, flat level, don't matter. She just doesn't behave like you're describing.

3. You're lying.

So which one is it?
The only option you gave that made any sense was #1, and my car is runing fine! Answering #2; I was going over 65 mph in 5th and I downshifted to 4th. I don't know what the Hyudai had in it but I was trying to pass it on the right and noticed it still on my left keeping up with me. 65 in 4th is in the upper part of the powerband. The 8 just doesn't have much torque, which helps in getting up hills. I never said the car was slow and I only gave my subjective opinion.

Option #3 doesn't deserve a response.

In regards to the 8 flying uphills? That stupid remark from you just proves you should just keep your opinions to yourself. And I wouldn't brag about passing winnebegos and 84 Cadillacs.

Talan, you get the Broken Record Award for Most Whiny Poster Regarding Power.

I still say you're yanking our tails. I don't think you have an 8. Your experiences don't match mine, nor they match those of many members here, whose cars seem to perform as the designers intended.

As I said in my prior post, I've had two lo-hp, lo-torque cars that were marvellous in hilly terrain. You had to absolultey flog the living snot of of 'em, but they responded very well, and passed traffic quite nicely. That your 8 isn't doing that just smells funny. The 8 has damnear twice the power.

So, if you're so unhappy with it, sell it, and get an SVT Cobra or something. You'll be happier with all that torrrrque, and we'll be happier not having to read your constant whining about the subject.

Since the 8 can do around 60 in 2nd gear, why would you have downshifted into 4th and not 3rd? You certainly would have had greater acceleration.

lol, an Elantra? I had to google that just to know what that car is. Fourth gear should of been plenty, there's either something wrong with you or your car.

trying to pass at 65 and you shifted into 4th? Your complaint thouldn't be in the car, it should be in your driving.

There are very few cars where you can make such a driving mistake(or be that bad of a driver) and still manage to "pull" as you pass.

A viper maybe? Vette? Honestly, even my friends 430 spyder doesn't really "pull" in the wrong gear.

Maybe you should get a mustang or one of the ridiculous Daimler-Chrysler offerings.

You need to downshift into 3rd gear to pass at that speed. I'm getting the impression that the people who complain about low torque do not know how to properly drive the RX-8 to take advantage of its powerband. You can not shift the RX-8 the way you drive a big displacement piston engine, you shift it like you would a motorcycle.

I think the real problem is that MOST people are so use to driving crappy cars (American cars from the last two decades), that when something as different as an RX-8 comes along, no matter how good, it's instantly discounted by the ignorant.

I've seen the stripped block weighed at under 200 lbs for the renesis. I have no idea of the weight of the F22.

I suck at driving manual, I have an AT 8, but when I drove the MT 8 it seemed great if you shift properly. I think this was definetly driver error. The one thing I did notice about the MT 8 is that the clutch goes pretty far down and is pretty stiff which is great but takes getting used to. It definetly takes more clutch work than a honda civic, the window of error is alot smaller in the case of the MT 8. I'm seriously thinking of trading in my AT for a MT, once I get better at shifting through a couple more test drives. Anyone here use any special techniques for shifting? I'm interested cause I suck at driving MT, I wish my shifting was alot smoother.

I also got an 8 like the one tested by the journalists. 15 MPG city, a quart of oil consumed every 2000 miles, and weak torque. But no flooding... only lots of smiling.

  1. Sell your 8 to someone that knows how to drive it.
  2. Don't pass on the right.
  3. See 1.
  4. Whether you're going uphill or not, what matters for acceleration is your wheel torque. For any given speed, you get more wheel torque if you make more power, regardless of your engine torque.

Honestly, you're a little too worried. I got my 8 after stalling it a bunch of times in the test drive. It only took me 2-3 days to finally get in traffic, and nobody really helped me. It just takes more left foot coordination to shift smoother which comes with practice. You're probably getting the car to jerk back and forth; don't let that discourage you. Trading in your AT for the MT will cost you some greens, but it would be a great decision if you want more fun and speed.

Yeah, I felt real cool when I was rocking back and forth coming out of 1st gear!! I JUST TURNED UP THE RADIO AND PRETENDED I WAS ROCKING TO THE BEAT OF THE MUSIC!! Just kidding I suck but I'm gonna trade in for a MT 8 or MT Mazdaspeed 3. Do you balance the clutch in every gear? I always thought you don't want to ride the clutch unless you're coming from 1st gear. My dealer said that I should shift my weight evenly with every shift from clutch to gas? I can't shift that fast doing it that way.

You want to avoid riding the clutch as much as possible, yes.

What do you mean 'my weight'? When you need to change gear...depress the clutch all the way in, shift into the next gear, let out the clutch smoothly and once you're about half way out, put some pressure on the gas, and then let out the clutch completely. It's not easy to put into words...you can probably google instructions that are more verbose, but you're not going to learn much from words. If you're gonna have another test drive, there is no way you won't see an improvement.

after you master the clutch on a sports car (or any car with a really stiff clutch), you will have no problem driving all stick cars.

So that was like a triple negative and I'm confused. I don't ride the clutch so much as when I come out of a shift my foot doesn't come all the way off the clutch, like I might have 2 inches depressed. I'm trying to kick the habit, but my last car had such a stiff clutch, it would literally throw you off the damn pedal. Am I screwing up my Tranny by doing this?

Just to clarify, I'm assuming you meant "yes, it is bad to ride the clutch"

Err yea sorry, I meant you want to avoid riding the clutch, because it is bad on the clutch. It was around midnight and I was too exhausted to type right

Back from class...

Firstly, I'm no expert, and a search would get you a lot more info.

Clutches vary between cars. Any use of the clutch is going to put wear on it, but using the clutch inappropriately will probably reduce tranny life.

You're saying you have the clutch about 2 inches depressed when coming out of a shift; I'm pretty sure that can be reduced. You obviously don't want to let the clutch completely out when you get on the gas, because of the RPM bounce.

BTW - let's try to keep the thread on topic

Because it can be a factor in how one percieves the car. Bog it down low in RPMS, and it'll feel like a slug. Get it up to the fat part of the powerband, and it will plaster a big grin on your face.
