RX8 Roll over
Mazda RX-8 safest from rollover
Cars all do well in new rollover ranking; while 6 light trucks tip up on 2 wheels in road test.
June 7, 2004: 10:06 AM EDT
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - A new government testing system meant to determine the risk of a rollover accident found only one car model got the government's top rating, while six of 16 light truck models rated tipped up on two wheels on a new road test performed by government safety experts.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranked 33 car and light truck models on their chance of a rollover in a single-vehicle accident. Light trucks include sport/utility vehicles, pickups and minivans.
It found only one -- the Mazda RX-8 -- received the top rating of five stars, which indicates less than a 10 percent chance of a rollover. But all other car models came in with a four-star rating, which indicates a rollover risk of between 10 to 20 percent. None of the car models tipped up on two wheels during road tests.
Fast and Safe. Damn good car.

I did some hunting and found the rest of the data. It appears that the articles are quoting the press release about the testing and not looking at the test results. Several cars in the medium passenger car class made 5 stars: Audi TT, Concorde, Sebring, Sebring Conv. Intrepid, Status, Mustang, Sonata, Optima, LS 300, RX-8, Mazda6, 350Z, S60. Their are others in other car classes. It would have been cool to be the only one but at least we got mentioned in the press release.

I did a search and found the data at www.safecar.gov. The 8 wasn't the only 5 star, it was just the only car given in the press release.

actually, those other cars roll over ratings are from the previous tests. the rollover test refered to in the article is new this year and the rx8 was the only car to get 5 in the NEW test.
the new test results can be found here with the press release.

from the safecar.gov site
For model years 2003 and earlier, rollover ratings will still have star ratings, but will be labeled as static rollover resistance ratings, and will be based on the SSF rating only. Consumers making cross-year comparisons of vehicles?rollover ratings need to be aware of this difference.
from the new rollover ratings (implemented due to the severe rollover instances - thank you ford and firestone) the 8 was the only car to get the top rating. the new test results can be found here

It's interesting to go to the RX8 page which discusses all of the NHTSA tests.
The last box has the car listed as FWD.
