ALL Rotaries to be Banned in South Australia if under 25
#28
thats my point. I'm under 25 and I own an RX-8 and I would think its safe to say I could beat my grandmothers civic in a street race... but I will never know. Why ban "high performance" drivers... a "civic" driver is just as deadly at the end of the day. So whats this law accomplishing?

Sounds like a halfway decent idea, but I think it is going about solving the problem the wrong way. Id prefer (at least in the US) to have more required instruction/training before getting a license. Something like some HPDE or Auto-X type school thrown in would help a ton Im sure.. maybe even some required snow driving :p Heck, if you're 18 you don't even need drivers training to get a license... that's just not right at all.
To what Philip said, I think cops need to be giving out more tickets for driving dumb (texting, makeup, no signal etc).

I like the idea of limiting what newly passed drivers can drive, but not based on age. It should be for 2 years after you have passed your test provided you get no points on your licence, then you are free to choose.
They can just limit it by what insurance grp the car is. IE no insurance for higher than group X until licence + 2 years.
Its already like that for bikes in thh UK> you pass initial licence, then can get a 600cc + bike afetr passing full licence.
New driver + hig performance USUALLY (not always!) = trouble.

I feel sorry for the sensible guys with rotaries but my mate died in an RX2 when we were young and stupid and thought nothing could kill us and 2 other mates died in V8's so I have to say it is a good thing as when you are young and short of cash and driving experience the brakes and handling on cars rarely get a look in when modding a car. I was a maniac when I was under 25 and to be honest am lucky to be alive myself.. So if it saves lives then it must be good.

I know I was happy just to drive. First car was a 1985 Hyundai Excel GS with a killer 74HP carbed engine. I made good use of the 5-speed gearbox. It certainly taught me a lot, especially driving up and down mountain sides.

the way I see it more drivers education is required. Our Drivers ed here consists of watching videos, taking a test, doing quite possibly the easiest road test ever and if you get points on your license... you watch another video and take more tests.
I have two conflicting mindsets on the subject. 1 side says just let them kill themselves. but I know that they will take innocents with them, so thats no good.
Other side says training is key. Make people spin out and teach them how to react and control it. Explain, and let them drive FWD, AWD and RWD cars, under 8\10's so they know what it feels like to push a car of that style cause they are WAAAY Different, something I and others learned the hard way.
and no written exam to renew your license... you go through this process every 10 years to keep your skills sharp, and prove you are WORTHY of a license.
"but nobody is gonna want to take the time for all that" Good, no license for you, less emissions (since they care so much Pssh...) less traffic, and most importantly, less ppl in my way.
The biggest problem we face has nothing to do with driving, its entitlement issues. Everyone feels as though they are magically entitled to drive on the road. No. You earn it, you respect it.

i actually like the idea.... I wish they would do that in the USA.
Kids need to learn to drive first and most of the time, giving them a performance car just equals disaster because they just aren't mature enough to understand.
all kids should have to own a econo-box with 140hp or less and not be able to touch the car from stock till they are somewhere between 18 and 21. It will also make them appreciate the vehicle more. They should be happy they have a car at 16.

I somewhat agree, my first car was a Jeep Wrangler MT. Then I got the 8

How about making it scarier for them to speed.
A day of jail for every ticket you get related to speeding. Well maybe that won't work, likely it would just motivate them to speed more if police light them up in attempts to get away from jail time. Well, at least Bubba would be a happy camper with lots of company...
Scratch that thought.

People it doesn't matter wether it's a sports car or not it can be their Mother Kia Sephia or a dam DAEWOO lmao... and these ******* will think their the $H!T, let's face the fact... when a teenager gets a hold of the wheel they feel if they are THE BEST drivers on the road until the oohh ohhh $H!T happens and crash...and be the cause why other family members have to suffer crying and being ashame for the rest of their lives
Let's be real like for example if one state does not allow some things , people will tend to move to where that law doesn't apply simple as that... Street RACES are a bit stupid and ignorant not everyone should do it , but lets be real how many of us have actually raced in a dumb car before ...

/\What he said.
25 is way too high imo. 9 years just to drive something somewhat better, how does that make sense?
If it was 21 years of age then I would agree, but heck, not 25.
It's usually the slow shitboxes that kill many people due to the limited and shitty power that they have. So people go WOT as much as they can so that they can go somewhere.

Hey, not saying I did not have fun in my Hyundai, but if it was a fast/powerful car I think it most certainly would have made a difference in how I handled it as a teen. So yes, I still believe it matters what you drive not simply on a maturity level, but on a mentality level.

Part of the reason why 18 is no longer considered mature enough for responsibility is because of the nanny laws withholding responsibility. If you think that 25 year olds who haven't been able to drive a sports car will be any more responsible than a 24 year old you've gone insane.
Hopefully this doesn't happen. It's a terrible precedent.
Oh and this really doesn't have squat to do with Rotaries since it doesn't single them out.

It just means young Aussies will be boosting more on lower displacement engines, or doing illegal engine swaps to replace the turtle outta their econobox. I think it actually promotes ingenuity and creativity when faced with such obstacles as a new law
On the flip-side are crotch rockets excluded from the whole equation? I mean, it's a LOT easier to kill oneself on one of those.

I agree with RK: Age is not a true test of maturity, sadly I was more mature when I was younger lol.
Any vehicle capable of 40 MPH + is capable of some damage. There is also not really many ways to stop ppl from driving what they want...
too young? Fake ID.
Too Poor? steal it.
a Fine? i'll pay to play, sure.
Arrest me? i'll be back in 3-5. Scratch that, 6 months with good behavior.
The consequences just aren't strong enough. Never will be.

The #1 cause of death for teens 16-18 is *single* vehicle car crash.
So I think barring younger drivers from performance cars is just common sense, although 25 is maybe a little too high.

I agree that offering a proving ground for such responsibility to drive high performance vehicles is a great idea.
In California, drivers ed/behind the wheel training most youth take sucks but is adequate for the majority of drivers to get a license. what if you want more?
A solution in Japan, the GPS in the new GTR only allows owners to drive full speeds when on an approved track. taking away rights sure, but cmon when are you going to top out the car on public roads (never.)
