Yep. And not a truly huge jump from the Shinari, either, especially in profile.

Uh huh. Kinda interesting how Taiki has flowed (pun intended) from Nagare to Kodo. I have a feeling that the sheet metal we see is a nod to the sustainability element inherent in the concept as well as what was learned about aero flow.

When first introduced, Taiki was regularly mentioned as associated with the 16X program. So work had been ongoing with regard to weight distribution and a few other things that would specific to the RX program. What the Sky-R might bring (direct injection rotary, laser ignition two most prominent mentions) is a rotary that is cleaner than a piston engine.

The fact that we're seeing Taiki and Kodo suggests that for at least part of Mazda the rotary work really never stopped being a daily/weekly task, or that any hiatus was much shortened than the doom-sayers believed.

I hate that man. So unreasonable. All he cares about is numbers. I mean...yea i get it...gotta make a good profit... but his idea of a yearly goal is waaaaaaay out there. Even at the height of popularity for the RX-7 they never got close to that goal. Most true sports cars do not get those numbers because sports cars are a niche market.

So thanks to this CEO... and all his number crunching glory (cuz im so sure their skyactiv crap wont make them money ), the rotary is dead for a long while.

Wow. Beat me by 4 minutes. Oh, well. Keep these future classics running, guys. And for God's sake, stop tarting them up with flares and blacked out gingerbread.

I haven't posted in ages, but occasionally check out the board to see if there are any new developments. To that end, and answering the OP question, I found this which I haven't seen posted anywhere here (it may very well be and probably is, but I haven't found it).

I take it as another "artist rendering", but it does seem to instill the new design cues. I'm sure some would love it while others would hate it - I personally think it's the best rendering I've seen yet, dream or no dream

^ won't happen. It doesn't follow the "Kodo" design language at all.

Don't get me wrong, I like whole "Kodo" design - but I find it very much lost in translation from concept to finished product. I like the new Mazda 6, but it's hardly the vehicle the Shinari evoked the potential of being.

I'm just happy to see somebody whip something together that looks 1,000 times better than the butt-heavy concepts that have been floated out there over the last five years.

I personally think that the 6 is far closer to the Shinari than most production cars are to their original concept design.

Still, my point was that a rendering for the next rotary that isn't using the current design style that Mazda implements isn't something that will ever happen, and obviously isn't from Mazda as they wouldn't permit a rendering that is contrary to the design that they are using. Wishing it to happen is about as realistic as wishing Ford would release a new Focus that looks like a Corvette.

i also don't see how anyone could possibly enjoy the idea of a rotary engine as a range extension for electric power. big woop, it's a generator now...

Why do you say that? I'd say that people that buy purely electric vehicles (to which range extenders are applied) aren't really interested in the idea of enjoying their car at all. They might not even know that it's possible to enjoy their car.

The generator would have 1 requirement: To be quiet.

That article is from August 2013. We have more recently available rumor mongering speculation with no substantial basis than this.

if you want to take anything with any seriousness, wait until mazda has an official announcement.

like on their own corporate web page.

Talking

This thread has grown bitter! It's not even fun to speculate anymore. I guess we should just keep our hopeful excitement to ourselves!

you guys are all wrong.

the next rotary will be based on the 10A, has 133 hp but it has a NaaAWwwzzz switch, when enabled, it will give the engine an extra 1337 hp boost. it has 3 and 1/4 doors, comes with real animal leather covered body and plastic uni-frame. has NTHSA rating of Pathetic. goes from 0 to 0.6 in 5 seconds and has a 1/99 weight distribution.

comes at 4 packages, not so great, omg, omfg, and wtf package. there is virtually no differnces between all 4 packages, its just a name tag to make owners feel special.

starting at 13.99 for not so great, 24599 for omg, 55699 for omfg, and 1.1 million for wtf package.

oh ****, forgot about the mpg, yea it's 1/0.5
