Autoweek Long-Term Rx8 Update
Got my magazine today and I haven't seen anyone mention it yet. Over all positive, still bitchin about the mielage and oil consumption. They claim to have burned through a case of extra oil (I assume they mean a 6qt case) in 13.5K miles. Which to me explains there average miealge of only 18.12mpg, i have have the mileage and have maybe gone through 2 extra quarts. I emailed them and told them there drivers must be hammering the car (not that I blame them), which explains the oil consumption as well as the mileage, thats like a quart every 2,200mi (and they have the "M" flash). They also bitch about the lack of torque [insert your own comment here], other than that they like the handling, utility and drive.
anyways, it should be on line soon, just thought people would like the heads up.

man i'd love to get 18mpg average. i'm a 15-16 mpger tho if i did drive almost all freeway i could be a 19er.
Actually for oil, I added about a quart at 2200 miles. I didn't get that number from you either. That's about how many miles I had on my car when I added oil in. It wasn't at the low mark but it was relatively close to it. I don't drive it hard either.

At least they recieved one that has been a good representation of the model...No flames or bad press from this one. I just wish more people had the same respect for our car.

What I don't understand is why they seem to treat the rotary's oil consumption as if it is a defect in the car rather than the nature of the beast.
And even if it had consumed a full 12-quart case, that's still well within Mazda's "quart per 1000 miles" guidelines given they have 14,000 or so miles on their test mule...

oh, I could give two craps about the gas or oil.. I've owned a few RX-7's in the past and knew about it already. Didn't mean to come off as bitching in my previous post, was just stating what i am experiencing
enjoy guys/gals

what I wish is that someone in the magazine would notice how the oil consumption is directly related to gas mileage, and if there staffiers are saying that they aren't driving the car hard, then they must be lying.
I drive the car hard and have only gone through 2 quarts of royal purple. Hell, if I had a sports car that wasn't mine and I was being paid to drive it and never had to worry about the gas, I'd be redlining it all day long too.
just admit it

Are the AutoWeek editors redlining at every shift? I have had my car 15 months and I've only added a splash of oil two times. Having to add a whole case of oil over a quarter is not normal, no matter if the engine is designed to consume it.

I drive my 8 through Atlanta traffic as well as some spirited driving at least once a day. I switched the oil in the car over to Lubrication Engineers 5w-30 and have seen no oil consumption.
