There is also talk about a possible 1.6L rotary that could be tweeked for higher rpm and hp. for the next generation rx8.

I didn't say I'm wishing the RX-8 to stay with the same power. For sales, it would obviously be better if it had more power. However, as a personal preference, I'd rather save weight than increase power. Also, as another personal preference, I would rather not have low-end torque since it doesn't fit with my driving style. Around town, I drive like a locomotive; slow but continuous acceleration. This is so my passengers don't feel like I'm going fast even though I'm doing 60 in a 40. If I had more acceleration down low, I wouldn't be able to do that. Now when I drive my car in anger, I keep it in the high part of the revs so low-end torque doesn't matter. I love the high-end rush, but low-end torque isn't my thing. Again, just a personal preference. I know there are plenty of torque junkies out there, I just happen to not be one of them.

This has become the rumor thread...lol

I heard Mazda discovered perpetual motion and it's coming out on the 2007 RX8. The name of course will now change to PM8...of course...lol

I'm just messing with you all, trust me I'm a dreamer too...still waiting for my 3-rotor from Mazda.

I see you there. Saving weight is never a negative. But my main point is that if the 8 had more low-end, or just more torque PERIOD, it would be signifigantly faster. It'll never have the root-ripping torque of a small-block anyway, so more down low might not hamper your style. I can see how your "locomotive driving style" doesn't require tons of torque, but if you had it all you'd have to do is go easy on the throttle. I do it all the time spooling my turbo up.

Well yes, of course I'd like the Unobtainium car: infinite power, zero mass, complete stability, negligible braking distance. Of course it would kill you through g loading, but that's another thread altogether. However, what I'm saying is automotive design is a series of trade-offs and so getting one thing means sacrificing something else. In this context, I'd rather they concentrate on the top end then on the low end. Once again, just a personal preference, but it's due to the dichotomy in my driving style between normal cruising and canyon road driving.

I think offering an RX-8 like the M3 CSL would be pretty cool. The same exact car, just with say a Mazdaspeed suspension (not the revalved Shinka, a real revalved suspension), and like 250lbs less weight. I'm sure it would cost and arm and a leg, though.

I think a special edition rx-8 track model or something , 200 lbs less, no luxiry, and every bolt on mazdaspeed makes for power,no bling bling, and a fair price.

I think that is a great idea. It doesnt really matter how many they make but the boost in the image of the 8 would be great. Hell even a boost in price wouldnt be a big deal because to really have a CSL thing going you would take out alot of panels and replace them with carbon fiber and aluminum and what not. So the materials are going to cost but the performance increase should be nice.

I thought Mazda squeezed all the power they could out of a 2 rotor 1.3L.

Of course, I hope I'm wrong...or if a bigger rotary could come out and pass emissions.

Lightbulb New RX8

I think the new iteration of the RX8 will be a hybrid rotary/electric. The compact and light weight rotary is a perfect compliment to two electric motors.
