talk to people - really i only heard this same thing from a journalist but was waiting to see someone print it before posting anything. things get said but then thigns get put on back burners and you look silly.
several of us(paul from mazmart , me etc) have been saying they will/should push the rx-8 slightly "upmarket" and land a new 7 below it in true 2 door form.
RG and I and others talked to the man in charge of the tranny development 2 7stocks ago. we mentioned it then. but everything takes sooo "long" in development time.
a twin clutch manual is a "proper" manual- no fracken torque converter. if you think its not a proper tranny because it doesnt have a clutch pedal for your left foot ive got one of those for you- im about to corner the aftermarket with these

Momentum Keeps Me Going
That Mag pic looks suspiciously like a hijacked Automotor & Sport drawing of Dec-28-2008 with the signature line removed, flipped and the watermark taken out.... here > http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/e...en-934489.html
So, nothing new to see here..just a ripoff, typical magazine plagiarism....
The story goes like this complete with "Cartoonist" rendering.

The future of the Wankel athlete is green.
2012, Japan's athletes Wankelmotor Mazda RX-8 in a new round. The RX-9 then baptized car should then be operated with hydrogen. Our cartoonist Mark Stehrenberger has the RX-9 is already outlined.
With the RX series, the Japanese carmaker steadily fixed on the rotary engine, although in these cases always use a little behind the competition runs. With rising environmental demands to Mazda Wankel engine still on hold and it is in RX-9, the 2012 inaugural, hold on. To the engine still umwelttauglich to be the youngest generation will operate alongside the gasoline with hydrogen can be operated. Such prototypes, the Japanese already in the RX-8 used in the test.
When styling, the number of RX on concept Taiki guided at the Tokyo Motor Show 2007 has been unveiled. It is also clear that the Japanese from the four-door concept with the opposite ailing back door will adopt, the RX-9 will be back as a classic two-applies. Classic remains the drive concept, in which all power to the rear wheels flows.
The Swiss-born Mark Stehrenberger stands for over 30 years of the automotive future for auto motor und sport. He lives alternately in Santa Barbara, California, and Montreux, Switzerland, and directs his well-established design team, MSD, which is for 'cutting edge' design in various fields a solid international reputation has.

The Toyota brand in most world markets is out of the sports car biz, as is Honda. The upcoming Subaru RWD Legacy coupe will only be sold under the Subaru banner outside of Japan. The S2000 was at the end of its cycle. The question is did they put development for a replacement on hold. If so, it will be a long time before we see anything from Honda. Toyota and Honda are pre-occupied making cars for people who don't like cars.
The field for non-premium sportscars is definitely smaller- albeit more capable.
I can see a small 2-seat 4th gen RX-7 which would basically be a hard-top Miata with a rotary (it may actually be cheaper than adapting the MZR turbo engine for longitudinal mounting). They would incur good cost-savings by sharing the Miata platform. I wish there were more details on the RX-8 replacement. I can see tweaking the existing RX-8 platform for the 16X and double-clutch.

Even though the SC model (which is the car i root for in the GT500) owns the nissan most of the time. i really dont thnk toyota is going to sit to the side and let the GTR get all glory. btu that is just my opinion.

Huge hole is huge
After owning the 8, it's great to take people around in the back...but...I think I'd rather get back to my 2 seater roots.
Though, I won't complain about a 4 seater! This is some extra exciting news!!!

I'll Take Both
If this rumor is true, and if the 16X delivers everything it promises, I would seriously consider buying both of these cars. The RX-9 would replace my Mazdaspeed Miata as my daily driver once I need to carry 2 car seats, which should happen about the same time the '9 comes out (I hope). The RX-7, if it seats only 2, would replace the older Miata track toy I'm planning to buy this summer.
If this rumor is true, It's a good time to be a rotor-head.

As zoom said, it was either 2 or 3 years ago at Sevenstock that the guy in charge of the tranny development let some info slip to us. He can thank his alcohol for that one! He slipped and told us that they were currently (back then) working on the transmission for the next RX-8. Obviously many things get worked on only to be canned later on down the line but the point is that even if this is false and they aren't going to do another car, they have not only talked about it but have also gone through many design steps towards making one.
It's interesting that every year we learn little things that on their own don't make much sense but after a little piece of info gets leaked out later the pieces that we previously thought nothing of all start to fit together. It's actually not hard to get clues from people. The hard part is knowing one when you get it.

Just kidding, we would love to hear more hints from you folks!!!
I really doubt about the 2600lbs target though...with all the safety requirements nowadays...is it possible?
Even S2000 got 2800lbs+...

An MX-5 Grand Touring with PRHT and an automatic weighs in at 2619 lbs. A two-seat coupe with a double-clutch tranny around 2600? Sounds pretty close...and realistic.

The current MX-5 is built on a shortened version of the RX-8 chassis. Would we expect the '7 and '9 to be built on versions of these platforms? I'd expect the '7 to be an intermediate length, with a wheelbase of around 99 inches or a bit shorter. Is that reasonable?
What configuration do you expect the RX-9 to have? The name RX-9 implies, to me, something larger than the '8. Perhaps it would be a 4-door sports sedan. If that's true---if it has 4 "regular" doors---I'd expect it to be a little longer than the RX-8. I'm not sure that an RE, even the torquier 16X is the best powerplant for anything larger than an '8.. It's tough to predict the weight of the car without knowing the layout. In light of Mazda's weight goals, you might expect a next-gen RX-8 to loose 200 pounds or so. If the '9 is a bigger car, such as a sedan---it would gain some or all of that back.
I'm curious to see how all of this plays out. Is it 2012 yet?
