GT86 Ill bet, will have equal if not more whp than the RX8. Quite a few 8's are running mid 170's with the 231/250 engine. A friends 192 was running 157whp. Its incredibly depressing. Many S1 who have the remap can only just get 200whp with CAI, decats and exhaust systems. Pretty poor really.

The twins have a slightly better peak power to weight, and definitely have a better peak torque to weight. The RX-8 has higher power (which starts to matter more as speeds go up) and more area under the power curve.
The two are close enough though, that the differences in one driver to the next will be more significant than the difference in ability that each car has.

Agreed, even with something as brainless as drag racing, the driver is undoubtedly the deciding factor between these two.
I have both cars and can attest the the 8 does feel slightly more powerful, and also noticeably heavier, it comes down to the driver and the nature of the course.

Thing with the 86 for me is the looks. It looks so ugly. Ive had this problem with japanese cars for years; they all look so damn european. From our Honda civics, Mazda's, toyota's. They are all such a drab european look alike crap.
The 86/BRZ rear just looks attrocious, the front looks plain and boring and lexus-like. Better looking that our Civic type R which looks like a round fat Honda Insight.

If Japanese looks = European looks = crap looks, then what = good looks?
The only other looks are American and Korean.
Not to mention that several Japanese brands use USA studio designs, USA cars use Europeans studio's designs lol. The world of car design is kind of a design melting pot wouldn't you say?
Not saying the twins win any design awards for sure, but they aren't terrible like Juke or other weirdos out there.

I'm not really sure where the styling hate is coming from... the twins have a very clean look to them, much like the s2000 had. Certainly a style improvement for Toyota who hasn't designed a good looking car since the MR2 turbo of the mid 90s... and as for Subaru, the brz is the very first good looking car they made.
Most car companies have pushed the ugly and/or plain envelope... American companies can't get taillights right to save their lives, Korean cars play it safe, Nissan tries to out-ugly the world, Toyota caters to the Buick crowd, Mazda tried to style everything with the flared front fenders of the rx8, Honda tried to be as generic as possible, Mercedes has played it safe since realizing in the 90s that a brick on wheels appealed to no one (even though Cadillac took that idea and slashed some diagonal lines to make their origami cts and everything thereafter and somehow rebuilt themselves), bmw's refusal to substantially change anything besides introducing the awful z8, the useless 1-series, and the 6 series allowed Audi to come back from the 5000 era abyss and make it the only German car to push the styling envelope with aesthetic designs.
There aren't many new (as in newly designed) cars which are out that look better than the twins in the sub 100k price range. In fact, I can't think of any.

You telling me thats not disgusting looking, especially in comparison to the beautiful japanese type R? Car design on the whole, is generally rubbish. Back in the days when you had the beautiful DC2, EK9, FD3S, GTO, Supra, Starlet and so forth.
Take the R3 RX8; the front is utterly vile. Its got the same Mazda family front end. Thats what its like now, all the cars look similar, theres very, very few great car designs outside of Ferrari IMO. Off hand there is the Citroen DS5 and most of the Jaguar range.
Theyre all much of a muchness, which as youve confirmed and pointed out; they all design each others boring dull cars. Its all a push for these eco engines or just supping up a shitty ford focus or renault megane. Most cars are going european boxy drawn with a ruler and no inspiration.

Well, it's obvious you were smitten by cars of old, however things change... so like the weather...if you aren't feeling it ... just wait a decade or two.
Personally, I find relatively few cars truly attractive in any given era. And worse, to me, most lose their sex appeal with age, much like people. The last Honda I loved/owned was my European 1987 Prelude, one great handling sports car. Today it's a bit dated, but then...
All current Hondas (and many other brands cars) are just bland - or worse, downright unattractive blobs IMO. Still some of today's styling trends aren't all crap to my old eyes, Ford's Fusion front is nice, also current Hyundai Sonatas are very handsome cars all around. Making any car (front/side/rear) super attractive, seems to be near impossible as it is so rarely accomplished in any era.
When I see a car that surpasses the attraction of my S1 RX-8, I'll likely buy it.

To me, these are my two favourite cars on the market;

I agree with Carbon though; to say this is suppose to be a thoroughbred sports car, the fact that a 10 year old 2+2 best of both worlds is a better vehicle is quite depressing.
I mean, the top of the range GT86 is £32k over here. For another £4 you get the Nismo 370z. And that destroys the 86.

European car pricing is really screwed up. I mean that's absurd. I budget Toyota costing near Nismo territory? Insane to say the least, whenever I see European car prices (Euro) I assume our price will be the same but in $$ - in that case it's like 50% MORE!! (and I think USA prices are way too high)

Civic Type R; £26,000/$40,000
Renault Meganesport 265; £28,000/$43,803
Ford Focus ST-3; £27,999/$43,653
Mazda RX8; £25,000/$39,110
Nismo 370z; £36,995/$57,874
GT86 top of the range; £32,000/$50,060
BRZ top of the range; £28,000/$43,803
Near as dammit price conversions. But yes, thats what our cars cost new. Second hand though, 2008 Civic type R's are £7,000, RX8's can be had for £3250 with a full rebuild and street port, 370z Nismo are about £20k second hand.
We get extortionate pricing. Would you buy a GT86 over here for that money, or a second hand RX8 with a new engine at a tenth of the price!

Im glad theres so many options off the shelf though aftermarket wise. Something the 8 is drastically bad at; modifications. In a few years I think these will serious grow on me.
Heres a good question; will they hold value because of how few, especially the BRZ's or will they not hold value because of the lack of interest?

When they were released, Scion's sales jumped 33%. Subaru is seeing near constant record sales, with a BRZ wait-line of 8 months at one point.
No, there is no lack of interest.
Any abnormal depreciation will likely be due to either an expectation that every one is trashed and beat on, or a larger than expected volume of them.

Um, not quite right. The depreciation of an RX-8 after 1 year was almost always about 1/3rd of it's MSRP.
Conversely, the Mazda2 will hold within $1,000 of it's MSRP for up to 2 years and ~35,000 miles.
It's not a myth.
