One way to explain it to your peers is.................... "Power = Pleasure = Petrol"

13B-MSP power has its fors & againsts but the balance is still in favour of the fors.

Its in a different league but its easier to explain the 300kw in my 20B-REW powered Cosmo simply as "Power=Petrol"

I think C&D where being very sympathetic to the rotary fuel consumption issue.

That man has no class whatsoever. 5 bucks says hes 17.

Was anyone else amused they needed to find a car that costs twice as much as the RX-8 so they could make the comparison, on GAS MILEAGE. The 20 grand you dont spend on the vette will make your poor gas mileage much more bearable

Do you actually know what the mpg for an H2 is? My friend has an H3 and we were at a Hummer dealership last weekend just to look around and the H2s they had didn't even have mpg on the window sticker. Where it usually has it on the sticker it said N/A. God knows it has to be worse than a H3, which I believe was 13/16. I would suspect the city miles would be in single digits. Ouch!

It's my 9th day with the car, and the 3rd tank. Well the first tank doesn't count 'cause I drove it 260 miles home , driving it in the city hurts a little. But what the hell I love it!

can't say i wasn't expecting this. i know there IS a improvement in mpg's over older rotary's...but how much??? no cares...

i'm definitely feeling the pain with recent gas price jumps... but if mpg was that high up on my list...i wouldn't have sold the miata as down payment for my 8.

+1 on u gotta pay to play!

and you think insurance rates are gonna be any cheaper for a vette?

vette owners pay for what they enjoy out of THAT car, as we do for ours. period!
vette= fiberglass+huge displacement and big power-weight-ratio...respectable domestic sports car with more uses other than drag racing...
rx8= rotary... high horsepower for small/light engine, need i say more?

seeing this is NOT gonna change my mind. and seeing 10 million more ain't gonna change it either. when gas hits $5gal, i'll pick up a used honda fit to make up for the difference.

wow... at least we can now adequately measure that persons stupidity and ignorance... we can now compare him to the rest of us on important factors like 'ability to research before making retarded statements', and 'likelyness to get laid this weekend...'

Like the saying goes, what you drive says a lot about what type of person you are. I don't buy clothes from JC Penny and I could give a flip about mpg.

I don't think my 8 is too bad. I have been getting 20 to 22 mpg for a while now. I drive most of my commute in stop and go traffic. I have noticed that when the traffic is the worst, my milage is the best. If you keep it below about 5k on the tach the milage is best. Very hard to though unless you have other traffic keeping you slow. When I first got it, I was usualy around 18 mpg. I have 71,000 miles now.

well hopefully the people at mazda read this, and urge on the 16x with better gas mileage and power. i think they should make a secret reflash for "offroad" purposes so emissions doesnt kill power and gas mileage again.

Talking

well i have been keeping the faith with my 8 for four years and 51,000 miles and the fun don't end at the gas station so mazda if your out there i think you should give your fans a break when they choose to buy another rx8 in the future and i am not talking about some guys who just got on board but to the faithful ones who should be rewarded for taking all the crap from the good ole m.p.g. getters out there.we did not build this car but we sure as hell fell head over heels for it when we saw it,drove it and bought it hook, line and sinker.i do not bad mouth any car out there but it would be nice to be on top for a little while(no punts you guys)waiting on mazda and hope they get it better than ever for us rotor heads !

I thouht for being an article with negative connotations, they did a pretty good job of flattering the rotary.

Was reading the latest issue of 0-60 while eating my granola this morning, and saw Jared's article. "Thailand: come for the sex change, stay for the motor swaps".

From a guy who once owned two Festivas, one of which had a running 1.6L turbo from a Mercury Capri (think 323 GTX) and the other one of which we Sawzalled into five flat panels and a firewall and threw in a dumpster, this should be good reading.

NA it drove me bonkers to get bad gas mileage without gobs of power to show for it. With a turbo, I don't mind the ****** gas mileage at all.

Of course, I've had the car for 4 years and it still has less than 20,000 miles on it , so even with the race gas I dump in every tank it still doesn't cost too much.

"Flatulent exhaust tone?" I guess the '8 makes as well as sucks gas.

No matter to me. I just love the high revin', instantaneous lane changes, and tight turning capability.

They should compare only sports cars for the m.p.g. issue and notice that they average roughly the same.....

I think the 8's mpg isn't bad considering the grin factor. I've had my car since Oct '03, 55K and still love it. I get 17~21mpg. I ride my zx14 (avg 35mpg) or Bandit 1200 (avg 40mpg) when I can, can't beat a bike for power/mpg. Overall I get more power enjoyment than a Vette owner, while getting better gas mileage, for the same price ; )

If you want a sports car gas mileage isn't something to really look at although it is a factor, but its pretty damn low on the list lol....

The numbers don't lie, guys. In this day and age, if you're going to try to sell a car that has an epa est 16mpg city 22 hwy with only 232hp, it better have a REALLY interesting and unique experience attached to it. No doubt, its fun to spin the 8 smoothly up to 9K. The problem is (this isn't news to any of you) it is underpowered for what it is. Everybody, and I mean everbody, says the same thing. Mazda needs to man up with the 16x and be more competitive with this ratio of fuel consumption to power, because currently, the MSP is getting the crap kicked out of it by some industry wide and fairly mundane engine technology. Smooth and 9,000 rpms is not quite enough, and the media is on to it.
