Has MNAO swapped ad agencies?

The new ads on TV are markedly different than the previous 5 years. More serious, more poetic, and better, I think, at driving home the point of a mazda. While keeping zoom-zoom. I like 'em a whole lot better.

New ad agency? They're that much different.

I would assume that the Marketing department at mazda do their own in-house ad design, most large companies do.

Also I don't know if anyone knew this but a few years back I think 2001 or 02, one of the chief marketing guys left Mazda because he didnt think the Zoom-Zoom thing was the right way to market the company, there was a huge fallout and he quit over it.

I wonder what he thought the right way was?

Actually, it's quite rare for a company to do its own advertising. (The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Benneton, the fashion clothing company). Typically one agency does the "main" national campaign that everyone knows ("Drivers Wanted", "Zoom-Zoom-Zoom", "Let's Motor"); though it's not unusual to divide up the rest of the work, assigning it to various smaller "specialty" shops (Hispanic advertising, Direct, interactive, etc.). But more and more, all the work is being done at one big mega-agency. Sometimes some of the teeny little assignments are done in-house, but hardly ever. All the car companies "national" campaigns are done by ad agencies—no exceptions, as far as I know. I believe it was FCB in CA that came up with "Zoom-Zoom-Zoom"—don't know if they're still doing Mazda's advertising, though.

If you're really interested, read "Where The Suckers Moon," by Randall Rothenberg, who used to be the NY Times advertising reporter. It's a detailed account of Subaru's search for a new ad agency. Very well-written—and fascinating. Reads like a good novel!

nike for example, has an inhouse design team of about 40 ppl or so that does various design stuff. but for a really big project, they goto their ad company wieden + kennedy. alot of companies do both, or just have an ad company do it all. rarely will a company do it all in house. they have to outsource.

Well Marketing is the only thing Nike does, its their "core competency", they don't produce anything at all, just market stuff with the swoosh.
