Hydrogen powerd RX8 in 3 years

I watched a special on Japanese TV about Mazda and the Renesis the other night. Funny thing is, when Ford bought Mazda they disbanded the Rotary team except for one person. That person was the engineer who decided to put the sequential turbos on the 13b. He started to build the Renesis in his spare time using old rotar housings from the factory. Nine other members from the old rotary team plus the original Mazda engineer who got the rotars to stop scratching the housings and the e-shaft from eating teath helped design it.
WITH NO BUDGET FROM MAZDA.
They built it in their spare time. The most expensive part of the develpment was the re-designed side seals, and the original parts manufacturer took on the 4million dollar debt load to do it. NOT MAZDA.
Once the engine was finished the engineers showed it to a Ford executive, and that's when they got the O.K to build the RX8.
BUT THEY HAD TO BUILD IT ON EXSITING MACHINERY.
So the same line that made the old 13b's make the Renesis and shoot out the HYDROGEN RE's engine.
Talk about cost savings for Mazda.
No RD budget for the Renesis....no tooling expence for the new side seals, and they build it on exsiting machinery.
Ain't that somethin...

Mazda hydrogen-gasoline cars to escort runners in marathon event
Friday, January 20, 2006 at 05:00 EST
HIROSHIMA — Mazda Motor Corp said Thursday it will offer the use of its RX-8 Hydrogen Rotary Engine car to escort athletes taking part in the All Japan Prefectural Men's Marathon Relay Race scheduled for Sunday.
It will be the first time that the car, which can switch between hydrogen and gasoline driving mode, will be used on public roads for such a purpose. The car emits no carbon dioxide and almost no nitrous oxide when powered by hydrogen.

Theres always a catch isn't there...
"There's only one problem. His system, according to knowledgeable scientists, probably won't work any time soon. So far, at least, lasers can't capture lightning. "
great story.
