Jason Isley and his RX-8 make it to USA Today Money section
hahah i like this bit
"come Friday, he wrestles the baby carrier out of the back seat of the Mazda RX-8, wrenches on a set of extra-grippy tires and slaps some magnetic racing numbers on the sides. Plop on a helmet, and the transformation is complete: family man to top-performing race car driver."
Good on ya Jason(ULLLOSE) remind me to buy you a beer some time or maybe a tire

That was a cool article to read... Hey Jason, can you talk a little bit about the start up costs to do auto crossing, in general at the least?
I've been thinking about it for the past year or so, but I never knew how much it would cost to start and run, and hearing $6K a year was pretty reassuring for my dreams. I guess the other thing holding me back is that I'm 6 foot 3, and I don't know if I would fit in the RX-8 with a helmet on.

The next step would be shocks, Konis can be found for $600. Some people like to change the front swaybar, $300 or less for this. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket some light wheels are nice, $2000, but not a must have.
I think our total start up was around $4000, because we did the expensive wheels and everything at the same time, but we have not had to invest any more money since 2005.
Most of our $6000 budget for the year is travel cost, fuel, plane tickets (because I drive to out of town events and the wife will fly) and hotels. This year we have a lot less out of town events so we should spend about half that.
There are a number of tall guys that run the RX-8, zoomfor3 (Chris Harvey) is tall, World Challenge driver Jason Saini jumped in one at the Solo Natl last year and he is a tall guy.

Nice article. Between this and the latest issue of SportsCar, I'm getting Isley overload! How long til he's on Jay Leno?
mtrevino, the startup costs for autocrossing is in reality about 20 or 30 dollars ... however much it costs for your local club's entrance fee. Tires, shocks, numbers, helmet ... all that stuff can wait until you figure out how serious you are.
