That's cool and all, but they guy has like a bazillion dollars, I think he can afford it. :p

If they're gonna give away RX-8's, they should at least give them to talented up-and-coming race drivers who are low on cash.

Cool. Something I have in common with Jay - an RX-8 and a first-gen Miata in my garage.

Too bad thats all I can fit in my garage.

The Miata and RX-8 6-speeds are the exact same transmission, but with different bell-housings and shift levers.

Thanks for posting this. His comments reinforce something seldom understood by the review-by-test-numbers-without-driving-it crowd: the fastest cars aren't always the most fun.

Of the cars I've driven, my favorite three shifters are:
  • S2000
  • Miata special edition 6 speed
  • RX8
so I wasn't surprised to find out they're supplied by the same company.

The New MX-5 (notice I did not call it a Miata-lol) 6speed is different, reverse is to the left.

I met him in Las Vegas a few years ago. I've got pictures somewhere of him and I. He's very friendly and a really down to earth kinda guy.

The one Mazda he's got that makes me grin a silly grin is the Cosmo. I mean, I own an 8, and drove a miata for 10 years.. but Leno has a cosmo.. *envy* I've only seen one in the sheetmetal, a loooong time ago, in London of all places. Impossibly tiny. I want one. Bad. It's really the car I wish Mazda would make again. (Photo from wikipedia)

I don't think that's the Cosmo Leno has... it was mentioned as being Mazda's first rotary car, so that would mean a Cosmo 110, with the 10A 1-liter twinrotor.

There were 2 cosmos.. one a sports car, one a luxomobile.

^correct. The article states he bought a '68 Cosmo, one of only about 4 or 5 in the US. That's the original Cosmo sports car and Mazda's first production rotary car.

If you want some good information concerning the original Cosmo 110S, check out the latest issue of Motor Trend's Classic magazine (not a plug). Off topic: There is also a great article about Steve McQueen's Ferrari, now owned by his son.

Also. check Mazda's History of Rotary.

Well, I owned a previous Mazda rotary powered sports car (FD) and before buying my RX-8 I drove a bunch of different coupes and picked the Mazda as the best. Maybe I should be expecting a brand new Shinka for my birthday too... I mean it's cool that Jay likes the RX-8, but the rich get richer comment kind of applies here.
