what do you mean the sun will rise in the morning? you really want me to believe that? i wish i could fully explain my situation publically here but i think if anything it would ruin what im trying to accomplish. so for now i guess ill just say my mistake for my post because now that i read it i should have realized at the time that there wasnt enough information for anyone to give a definate answer.
by the way there isnt any problems with my 8 that i know of currently but anything can change when they call my car in.

Mine had the auto leveling headlight malfunction. They replaced the sensor ($$$) on the rear suspension and the system is fixed.
Maybe you need a new dealer?

Chill, everyone—this is not that big a deal. First of all, seems like the vast majority of cars will keep the engines they have. I believe that's true. Second, Mazda had to replace the engine on my '99 Miata—hundreds (thousands?) of them were built with a mis-machined main bearing cap that gradually ate away at the engine. So they replaced it, the new one worked fine, and that was that. (And no, the problem didn't destroy the reputation of the Miata or Mazda, though of course, at the time many predicted it would. In fact, to this day the Miata is considered one of the most reliable, trouble-free cars you can buy. Imagine that!) Finally, I think it's disappointing that so many of you are angry at Mazda. Yes, it's a pain in the *** if your engine has to be replaced, but that's all it is. I give Mazda SO much credit just for going out on a limb and making the damn car! Mazda has always been one of the few car companies that genuinely seems dedicated to smart engineering—not just talking about it, but doing it. Do you honestly believe the decision to even make a rotary engine car—the only one on the planet—was based primarily on $$$? I bet the car was given the green light despite what the accountants said—not because of it! So I find all this talk of disappointment, poor engineering and "it's all about money" very sad. Reading all the posts on this thread, it's no wonder there's not more real innovation in the car world. Just my 2¢. (Okay maybe 3¢.)

K im going to say this to the new ppl to rotary world. Mazda always have issues with rotary, this can go back to my FC days. My bigges problem was always cooling and mazda needs to work on that. Okinawa is very humid and hot place. So cooling issues was main concern. Im not good at explaining in english , but what i want to say is everything will be ok with the 8 at least i hope. Yes we have more issues with our engine then others, belive me i know i use to get dogged on by friends who drove nissans. but these problems we have with rotary has always been there, but just new ones and old one it seems. now i live in US, but when 8 came out, i knew i was going back to the world of trouble any how i hope rotary will get better. btw good thread i shall read this today while at work :P make the time go by faster.

I've taken a que from the whole "Mulligan Gate" fiasco and just going to take a "wait and see" attitude to this. When the recall gets released officaly I'll take my car in.. take a rental for the day and most likely get my car back later on in the day.

LOL As someone who wants this car, this thread doesnt help my choice much. I know I dont want a car that has a chance (and seems at good odds) that it will need a new engine or more under 60k miles. Looking up lemon law for protection before I consider further.

My car is almost 2 years old and has 5K miles on it and it runs perfect, it ran perfect this weekend at Road America on the track. If it fails the test can I prevent them from doing the engine swap?

I never understand why people get so upset about recalls. I am an engineer and from that point of view I look at a recall as a positive thing. It means they found a flaw and the cause of that flaw and are actively pursuing a solution. By finding the flaw and the cause future products should get better.
I can also tell you as an engineer who has spent a lot of time field testing product is that no matter how many engineers, even the best of the best, you have there will be flaws in a design. Bench and lab testing flushes out many of the issues but nothing can substitute for real world use across many people who all drive differently. Even though fundamentally driving is the same for all.
Another thing that I take into consideration is that the Rotary engine has really had only one major supporter. Mazda. It does not have the billions of dollars invested in it that a piston engine does and probably never will. Piston engines have been around for 100 years and the Rotary for only 40. Not to mention the design of this particular Rotary is substantially different for previous so expect some problems.
As to Mazda not "coming clean" on what and why this is happening I offer my own experience again. I think of the quote "The reason there is some much ignorance in the world is that the people that have it are so willing to share it." I know when we find problems we (engineering) do not disclose all the details till we are sure of the problem. Once you explain a problem to someone, especially management, you find it is almost impossible to reverse that explanation if you find out you were wrong. I have had manager try to help engineer fix problems based on an old disproven root cause. It is hard to swallow that as a consumer but it is harder to reverse and explanation.
My 2 cents.
EDIT: How many cars were recalled by Toyota, GM and Ford over the last year?

im surprised you guys dont have that screaming kid from the i started my own college movie yet
in short i think there is plenty of rx8 owners who are a bunch of diletants and experiment with oils and other **** and later try to blame it on mazda or just dont want to properly drive a manual high revving engine (why would you even get this car) .. also there plenty of you who are just little bitches and complain about everything as if you wanted to go back to your high school drama ****
warranted there are ppl who have there problems i counted about 6 posts in this thread that would indicate that.. then another knowleadgable person calmly stated that mazda expects that this wont even affect 1% of the cars out there
in any case .. if you have issues get them fixed .. thats what warranty is for
if you have this specific issues mazda just created a process to resolve it faster .. so be glad that you wont be driving that geo for weeks
if you dont have any issues then make a mental note of following the manual and refrain from bitching .. period
as far resale goes ..problems are getting fixed .. there will be more and more trained rotary mechanics out there .. so anyone with a brain wouldnt have a problem owning an 8
in fact now that i see this community of hypocrites .. i think it's a great time to pick up an 8 .. its like getting a steal deal at a divorce sale

having new cat.two headlights,three tailights,two glove box doors(center console)oil pan,
new starter, three sets of plugs, new battery, new transmision.i can say no real engine failures.i have a 04-6sp. i don't baby it to much and i don't slam it too hard but i cannot complain about how many times it has saved my life due to the point it runs pretty well for 32,000+ miles i don't have the dealer work on anything but oem problems i mostly do all my own work(oil, trans fluid, brakes etc)this has been a good car for everyday driving(winter time is honda time)i really do not want someone elses engine w/out knowing how long it will last!!!i do know i let the dealer talk me into changing my break in oil for a early oil change but i am over that and keep the oil change oem filters and a good brand of oil when i change it .no real problems to report but i do have faith in mazda because it's not like the pinto(ford early 70's) that if it got hit in the rear cancell x-mas!!we have a company that i feel is trying it's best to come to terms with it's customers who really believes in there product and hopes it all comes to an end with happy people enjoying there cars!!mazda like all other companies pretty much answer in time the questions we all have .time and time alone well tell. happy motoring be safe and above all be glad it's not a yugo!!!

^^ As I noted in another thread, Ralph Nader is an *******. If nothing else, he prompted and entire line of thought that liquid gas is explosive.
I'm sure its covered somewhere in the thread, but I missed it as I passed through the 20 pages - is there a "hard date" for the TSB?
Autoweek said "this or next week".
