Got my letter today. Calling the dealer next week to see if they have any idea on it (probably no).

The service rep admitted that he didn't let the engine warm up before he drove it (I heard him tell the tech) but that it should still be okay. They restarted the car and let it idle/warm up and the rpm's were fluctuating around 500 rpm to 1500 rpm back and forth for like 30 seconds and then it turned off again. They restarted it again and drove it back into the shop area, plugged it in for the diagnostic and it kicked out an "everything checks out fine" and well that's where it ended. I'm telling you the techs and the rep are just baffled by my RX8, they just can't get it figured out. So what else am I left to try? The Mazda engineers have already looked at it, walked them thru 2 engine replacements, replaced starters, ignitions, coils, wire sets etc. and still nothing. My only other choice is to try and drive it to So Cal but who knows if it will make it. At this point I think the dealership would love to get rid of my car because it has been kicking their asses for over a month and a half. What else is a brother to do?

vegas.
A bouncing idle from 500 to 1500 and back, coupled with stalling indicates a good ol' fashioned vacuum leak into the engine from some point after the MAF, IMHO. The ECU "chases" the perfect mixture based on the O2 sensor info, but can't hit it because the total air intake is greater than what the MAF sensor is reporting to the ECU. The real test is to put it on an exhaust "sniffer" and to see just what the exhaust is doing. If it's repeatedly going rich-lean-rich-lean at idle (with the occasional stall tossed in for fun) then it's an intake leak somewhere.

Tell them to fix it or buy it back.

Don't take no for an answer.

Hire an attorney with experience in Magnusson-Moss and consumer law (as it applies to motor vehicle issues [aka 'Lemon Law'] if thye make you.

Sorry to everyone who doesn't agree, but there's absolutely no reason a car company shouldn't do the right thing when the car doesn't 'work.'

Let me give you my professional opinion. You have a drop dead open and shut lemon law case. Get a new car. Every manufacture spits out a few lemons. My sister had a 97' Accord that was in the shop eight times and they could not figure it out. They took the car back after some negotiating with me and she recieved another 97' Accord EX that she stills dirves and refuses to sell. It has had 180k trouble free miles. I have replaced the timing belt but other than that it has been a great car.

Dang, my new 06 is included in the darn recall... by less than 1400 units according to my VIN! Oh, and I happen to live in THE worst climate, AND I'm still running on the original oil (only 2000 miles on the car), AND I've had to cross the hot CA desert 5 times in the car so far at "low altitude cruise"... LOL Perhaps the PCM settings could explain the poor mileage in 106 degree conditions? Mileage picks up 5 MPG when I cross in to LA, even with stop and go traffic!

My letters (one for recall, one for warranty extension) arrived from Mazda today. They were mailed from Brea, CA, which is the city right next door to me.

Too bad I don't have an RX-8 anymore. I'll forward the letters on to the guy I sold it to. "Hey! Hope you're enjoying the 8. Want the good news, or the bad news?"

Right. I haven't seen many complaints about stalling, though some have noted idle fluctuations over the first several days, give or take; with a few stalls. But it sounds like the idle problem clears up.

RX-8s are owned and driven by enthusiasts, not by simple consumers who hate cars Many enthusiasts, especially collectors, like to keep their cars ]
Even with recall notices, Mazda beats Toyota, and let's show Beavis and Butthead on a sofa laughing and saying

"They said: " enthusiasts, collectors, heh heh!" This little car is going to go collectable!

Welcome to the new Engine club.
They do not replace the Engine they just rebuild it. I marked the core. The mark is still there.

OMG! I hope we dont go collectable! Its hard to find parts as it is, for a good price. I dont want to think of the price of parts for a "collectable" car.

Are you saying that your engine was rebuilt by the dealer and reinstalled in your car?

The data provided by vegas RX-8 shows a rebuilt motor supplied by MNOA,part no N3H3-02-200R-00 and a core returned to MNOA.

A few details about this would be good...what did you mark??

Makes me wonder about the dealer??

There is no way they do rebuilds and turn them over that fast.....

Maybe it's the same motor???

I repeat---every time i have had a new flash done the car did not run right for about a day or 2--I wonder if the techs are installing the engine but are not road driving the car at all. This ecu has to learn the engine it has under it's control. The numbers of all the testing will be fine. Hell the 1st 5 drive cycles after I got the S I had to hold the throttle down so the idle never got under 1k or it would stall every time. 2nd day it was a little better,3nd 4th day it was good.

Took my '06 in for the visor replacement last week and they checked the recall status, scheduled an appt next week. Today the official notice arrived--Mazda is extending the warranty period to 5 years/60k miles from original purchase date, providing a replacement vehicle if the engine needs replacing, reimbursing owners of "reasonable" costs if they have had to repair any of the parts in question--it appears they are acting responsibly since this is voluntary and care about the reputation. Hopefully, the dealers mechanics are up to speed on diagnosing and correcting so that people don't have to keep returning.

happens every time you disconnect the battery too - wonder how many people slam their mods or whatever after disconnecting the battery . Lots I bet !

Mine always runs much better immediately after an ECU reset.
Each car is different.

Because every car is different?

If you have thousands of samples but only two possible outcomes (better or worse), you will have an interesting (boring) result. There is no need to ask why - the result is the "why".
